Diaper Changes ONLY on His Changing Table!

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has a similar experience:

I have a 14 month old boy who never caused any problems with diaper changes so far. He even lifts up his legs while on the changing table and is overall happy. But recently I have noticed that he doesn't like to be changed anywhere else than on HIS changing table any more... and I mean not liking it as in screaming, crying, wiggling, kicking, so it is IMPOSSIBLE to put a new diaper on at all.
I have noticed that the problem seems to be the idea of lying down somewhere to be changed... I know that at this age they often go through a phase like that, but I find it so strange that he is fine on HIS changing table.

To make things more complicated, I am going on a 2 week trip to Europe next week... so I don't really know how to cope with the diaper changing yet. I tried the Huggies pull-ups overnights, since I can put them on when he is standing or sitting and they fit well. Luckily, they make them in his size already, so I guess I will have to take a big supply of those with me (for some reason they don't sell Huggies in Germany).

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thanks,
E.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your help! It was great to see that I am not alone with my problem!! I took all your advice in, which helped me get over the nervousness about the trip to Europe. I had enough time before we left to get a master of changing his diaper standing up. As soon as we were at our destination, he decided to be ok again with lying down for his changes... aren't they so smart?!!? Well, now we are back to normal, but I am very grateful to have had the support of all of you!

I know what you're going through. Have you tried to distract him? I've found that when I sing to my daughter or ask her to help me hold the wipe container, the power, or a toy, she tends to fuss less.

Good luck. Have a wonderful trip.

Yes, they do get crazy once they feel like they have control. What about moving the changing pad onto the floor to transition him that way?
Hope that helps.

Hi E., I suggest you start today by picking a special changing pad and using it ON his changing table. Maybe pick a quilt with disney characters or a distinctive pattern so he will recognize it as his changing pad. Make a big deal of placing it on the changing table "just for him". Hopefully he'll pair the special changing pad with diapering and simply bring the quilt/pad with you wherever you go. good luck! I'm a mom of 8, My youngest is 2. I have 4 girls and 4 boys, and my boys had WAY more toileting issues than my girls-I think its because of body parts being on the "outside".

I had a similar problem with my little man, and I did the huggies pull-ups as well. We do what we have to, don't we? Good Luck!!

Just a note on Huggies in Germany....I am living in Russia at the moment for the next few months. They have both Huggies and Pampers here as well as a few German brands and they sell all kinds of pull ups in all sizes. You probably won't have a problem finding stuff there.

Hi E.,

Why spend the money on pullups? If you are using disposable diapers, pullups are more expensive. You can change a regular diaper with a toddler standing up - and taking them off is actually more convenient because there's no chance your baby is going to step in his own poop.

Good luck and enjoy your trip!

E.,

Try giving him a toy that he only gets when he is having his diaper changed. I would switch to changing on the floor only if you can so that you can avoid him falling off if you lose your grip.

Good luck!

Nothing to worry about, he will come around,

Its sort of like stage fright

my oldest was like that, and still can't use the bathroom at school,

I usually like to use MY own bathroom at home even tho to get to it i pass the childrens and guest bathrooms.

its more comfortable for me and i can relax,

I know it may seem silly that he feels more comfy at his table because he already went poo but its a comfort zone none the less,

--As for the trip just make sure to prepare
BEFORE changing him, get the diaper wipes and cream out in advance, to make things more organized

AS FOR COMFORT- Start using the changing pad you plan on bringing with you on your trip, and put that on his table,
this wat it becomes something familiar
ALSO introduce a special small toy or blanket
you put that into his hand while changing
the receiving blanket is the best because you can cover his head and he can hide ect.. keeps him warm, and comfy and is easy to was and replace.

Hope this helps,

Ps BRING PLENTY of Diapers for the plane ride wink wink

I don't have any suggestions. I just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone. My youngest are both in diapers. They are 16 months, and 26 months, and both nearly have panic attacks if I put them down anywhere in public to change them. At home they are ok to be changed on the couch instead of the changing table sometimes, but not in public. Hmm, maybe some new and exciting toys to play with while you change him. Good luck!

does this table give support for the body or explaine how this table is designed it may have to do with how secure he feels on this opposed to other areas of changing. Some babies have a falling or unsecure fear and this causes them to be unhappy. I had a baby that would not swing, he was so afraid I never could use it. Most babies loved the swing to put them to sleep not this one. Hope this can help

have you tried just doing stand up diaper changes with his regular diapers? my son won't lay down still for a change anywhere. stand up changes worked for us.

Hi E.,

Your son sounds like he's developing right on time. Fourteen months is exactly the age of sudden, passionate preferences.

Have you thought of switching him to standing-up changes everywhere, even at home? If he gets comfortable (and you get skilled -- it takes a little getting used to) with standing-up changes, that might make your travel situation easier.

Hope that helps!

You can start using a 'special cover' (towel, sheet, peice of fabric) on the changing table when you change him, and then slowly transition the cloth to the floor, couch, etc. Most of the time they are so used to something that change is hard. If he still feels something is his when he is moved, he may be more comfortable.

Buy something for the diaper changer that your son will love, whether it be a new pad or a toy, then when away only give him this new diaper change accessory while you are changing him! Maybe a nice thick pad as well, if he is used to his changer maybe the floor is too hard? Good Luck.

P.S. this is not uncommon, my two year old who is still in diapers and too big for the changer will only let me change her diper in the hallway...nowhere else!

And have a great time in Europe, Best wishes for a happy and heathy trip!
