My son, 2, just had his first normal poop yesterday after having the nasty stuff you described for two weeks!! I was worried too, but I've known a few other kids who had it for 2 weeks as well!!
Ok i know this is kinda gross but here goes. I plan to call the Doc again but i'm a little worried. My 2.5 yr old son got the watery yellow poop on sat/sun/mon and tues. Wed it turned into brownie mix poop. So wed/thurs/fri/sat and sun he has this brownie mix. No blood, no coffee grounds... but today there was this snot looking mucus mixed in coming out of his butt (ewe). He has had some limited fruit the past few days but mostly just breads, cereals (he's not taking bannanas) and i'm giving him that acidophilus for kids (forget what its called). I just thought 9 days was a looooooong time. He's acting normal but these poops are messy and stinky and I wondered if anyone else had this (virus?) or if its bacterial. He's not dehydrated. He has had no new foods, no fruit juices and only drinks rice milk or water. He has food allergies but no new foods introduced. and no vomiting or temp. thanks

sounds like Roatvirus to me. Is it 'frothy' at all?
Rota definitly has a distinct nasty smell.
usually last 7-10 days.....so if it is, you should be toward the end of it. Nothing a doctor will do about it. Needs to run its course, & keep hydrated
About me~ SAHM, (former RN)to G/B 5 y/o twins,& a 2.5 y/o girl
Two of my kids have had Rotavirus
I concur with the rotovirus guess...sounds just like what my daughter had. My doc said that as long as she is not dehydrated, just wait it out. He did say that cow's milk can aggrevate it-but it sounds like you are not doing an dairy. It will be over soon-Hang in there!
side note-When I took my daughter in for a checkup recently, my doc said that there is a new roto vaccine. We opted not to do it because of the cost....luckily she didn't get it this year, but listening to your story is making me think that maybe it is worth the $250!
Hi S.. I am a Pediatric/OB RN and think that you should call your doctor. 9 days is too long. Your pediatrician may want you to collect a sample of his stool to send for testing. It may be nothing, but with the duration of time and the description of his stool, I really think it is in the best interest of your son to get him checked out. Good luck!
9 days is long however, normal. Some of these things can last up to 2 weeks! as long as he is urinating- at least 6 times a day, has tears when he cries and his mouth is mosit it sounds like he is doing ok. If he has 4 or more loose stool in a day to the brat diet- well I know you said no bananana by rice, applesauce and toast. no juice or anything that starts with a P. no peachesm, prunes, plums, peas etc.. If after 2 weeks it contines call your pediatrician. good luck!
I have Crohn's and that really sounds like something I would go through.
Have you tried the BRAT diet?
Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast
I saw someone mentioned the Rotovirus- You should see the dr. Nine days is too long for loose stools!
Plus if it's got mucus mixed in, that's not good.
Call your Dr. today!
My daughter, 18mo, had the same thing for about a week and a half in the begining of April. I did not even call the doctor because she was fine other than the messy, stinky stools...no fever, hydrated, running around playing with a big appetite. Both of my children have been through this before so I was not too worried but call your pediatrician if you are worried. It is better to be safe than sorry and you know your child best! BTW, my 3 year old son DID NOT get the Rotovirus vaccine and my 18mo old daughter DID get it...so far my daughter has had 3 episodes of these messy, stinky stools and my son has had only one. Of course, I cannot say that either one of them has actually (factually) had the Rotovirus but....
Sounds like it could be rotavirus. Rotavirus often lasts from 3-9 days.
Nothing much they do for that. Just make sure that he's staying hydrated (plenty of pedialyte, juice, water, etc). Seems like it should be the end of the virus cycle, but make sure he's washing his hands thoroughly several times a day.
Hope he feels better soon!
