Diagnosed Miscarriage Q. Is It Vanishing Twin?

Holy cow! Numbers, dates. Sit back catch your breath. You can't change the outcome. I am trying to figure why you went to ER. Talk to your doc about all this but in the end, it is what it is. You cannot change it. I truly am do glad I had my kids years ago. I was almost 90% sure I was pregnant with my second. Period was late which it never was. Start bleeding a lot. Just waited it out. No ER no calls to doc. Just waited. Yes I was pregnant and bled for three months. So sit back and in time you will know. Dont mean to sound harsh, but all these tests do nothing but have you worry about things that you have no control over

I agree with Sally R, and am sorry for your loss. You need another u/s to find out if you're still carrying a baby or not and if not, you may need a D&C if you are not. It's common for hcg levels to stay high and for pregnancy symptoms to linger after a miscarriage. Regarding being able to feel babies earlier with each pregnancy...not entirely accurate and this point really is too soon to feel anything. I've had 4 pregnancies (twins with the last) and never felt anything until around 18-20 weeks.

FWIW, I have two friends who had a vanishing twin and they had no miscarriage symptoms, the other embryo just stopped developing while the pregnancy for the healthy baby continued as normal.

When I lost my first twin (in my twin pregnancy), I only had mild cramping, which did send me to the OB. An u/s confirmed that Baby A's heart was no longer beating. I did not have any bleeding until 2 says after u/s confirmed that the SECOND baby had died as well. That was 9 days after the first baby passed.
If you have passed that much tissue, you likely miscarried, but have not expelled all the tissue, which is why your HCG levels are still a bit higher.
I'm sorry for your loss. Go see your OB ASAP.

Even if your dates are correct and you were only 3 weeks pregnant with twins.... I think your HCG would have been more than 7000.

You need to have a repeat HCG test to be sure. When I have had all of my miscarriages the Dr followed my HCG until it was less than 5. I don't remember timeframes for the miscarriages I had 10 years ago... but the one I had a year ago (it was actually ectopic) my HCG was not less than 5 for THREE MONTHS after I started bleeding. It just takes a long time for your hormones to go back to normal.

Call your Dr in the morning and ask to be seen.

It's so hard to say. You really need to see your OB and have an ultrasound plus blood work to figure out what's going on. I think all your testing and talk of numbers may be stressing you out and causing unnecessary anxiety.

I do have one friend who had miscarriage symptoms in two of her pregnancies. Both times, tests confirmed that she did lose a twin, but had one healthy, full-term baby remain.

My daughter was pregnant and was about 3-3 1/2 months along. She called me at work and said she thought she was having a miscarriage, could I please come to the hospital. She was bleeding everywhere with huge clots. There was even a tiny little thing in it that could have been the baby. The doc told her to be sure and visit her OB/GYN so they could make sure her hormone levels dropped correctly, then no need for a DnC.

A month or two later on she called me again, very very very upset. She kept saying the baby was still inside her and she wanted it out, her breasts were tender, no period, getting bigger stomach, etc....

So I met her at the ER and she was laying on the table crying hysterically. She kept telling the nurse "No, I have NOT done anything to get pregnant again". The nurse kept placating her and said "Honey, you probably just got pregnant again"...

Finally my daughter said "Do an ultra sound and see". So the nurse smiles and goes to get the wand to listen to the baby's heart beat.

My daughter's tummy had a normal heart rate but her baby's heart rate was around 140. Then the nurse got concerned. To hear the heart beat with that tool my daughter had to be at least 4 months pregnant.

So she had to have lost one twin and the other baby was fine!

Hcg - pregnancy hormone takes a long time (sometimes months) to get out of your system. I had a number of miscarriages and for a few of them I finally had a D & C because it would not expel. You might ask for one more ultrasound and then decide whether or not a D and C would be a good idea. I even had one miscarriage where the HcG's kept going up and they were afraid it was a molar pregnancy (i.e. not viable but the tissue keeps growing and can even turn malignant)
I'm not big on surgery, but usually after the D and C all the symptoms go away and it's a big relief - especially if you're absolutely sure that it's nonviable.

I had what they call the vanishing twin with my second daughter. My OB noticed a second fetus that looked like it passed around 6 weeks, this was at a 9 week U/S. She told me to just expect a little bit of brown blood and said that it would just be absorbed into my body. That's basically what happened, it wasn't like a miscarriage at all (I've been through that too). Your OB should be following your bloodwork down to 0, that will give an indication if your levels are going down or if there's another concern. My OB told me it's important to moniter the levels down to 0 because any leftover can be cancer causing. Talk to your OB. Take care.
