Detoxing While Breastfeeding

Hello, I have researched about this and can't find any definitive answers. While doing a juice fast to rid your body of toxins, will it be released into just your bloodstream or into your milk supply? Also, they say that you need to get an adequate amount of fat in your diet while nursing if you do a juice fast, but I have some fat reserves, like some belly fat. Won't your body just use those reserves while juicing if it's not getting enough fat and go straight to the fat cells, therefore it would not be necessary to eat all that fat if you've got some stored up already? I plan to nurse at least 18 months and want to rid my body of toxins now, but my baby is only five months. I don't want to wait that long, so, any helpful advice?!!! Thank you.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Okay ladies, thank you for sharing all your advice....I think what I'll do is eat more raw veggies and fruits, instead of a juice fast. Advice heeded!!! ;)

Toxins do go into breastmilk. Even losing weight rapidly can cause problems for breastfed babies due to the toxins released from fat.

Ask your doctor, not random people on the internet. Take your health, and your baby's well being, seriously!
I ate & drank whatever I wanted while I was nursing (even some alcohol, within reason, of course) and I had happy, fat, healthy, thriving babies. Since I was only 25-30 years old and in good shape it was all good, and I had no need for fad diets.
If you are older and heavier and have serious weight/health issues for SURE see your doctor.

Our bodies get rid of toxins every day, through normal elimination. There is no need to do anything drastic to "detox" our body.

Please eat a healthy balanced diet while breastfeeding!
You should talk to your doctor for knowledgable advice. But since you asked here - this sounds like a bad idea to me. And no, I don't think that fat metabolism works as you are describing (your belly fat won't substitute for the healthy fats you should be eating while nursing).

A juice fast is dangerous and puts too much stress on your body. Toxins are released through 3 methods: elimination (urine/feces), mucus membranes (so a lot of people get tremendous nasal discharge, for example), and the skin (so a lot have temporary acne, some rashes, etc.). My bigger concern with breast milk would be the complete absence of vital nutrients. You are assuming that your fat cells contain the nutrients you and your baby need - but I don't believe there's any scientific basis for that.

There are a few helpful, safe, gentle and ongoing detoxifying regimens that you can do that rid your body of toxins on an ongoing basis. They lead to a healthy colon, but also a reduction in allergies, better skin, and so on.

On a daily basis, you need a precise combination of healthy proteins, healthy fats, and healthy carbs. You can supplement effectively and safely with something with no warning labels. If it's all food and no drugs, it's safe for the baby. In fact, there are products developed by experts in pediatric nutrition. And the many pregnant and nursing moms in my professional circles have found their babies benefited from proper nutrition (given that our foods are so depleted and even those who eat organically have nutrition deficiencies). A lot of babies have less reflux, less constipation, better brain development and fewer issues going forward (focus, ADD, and more). But you have to do it properly and with the right ingredients. Depriving your body, and your baby, through a rigorous cleanse is not a good idea.

Mamazita has given you sane advice. I hope you follow it. The detox can wait, and probably should. But ask your doc or a dietician FIRST, to be safe.

Anything you do to release toxins will have them end up in your breast milk.
That's why you don't find any recommendations for doing this while breast feeding.
It's worth it to keep your milk good for your baby and wait on anything like this till you are finished breast feeding.
Once you've weaned your child then do what you want.
Our bodies don't store toxins - they are eliminated every day by our kidneys and liver.
Drink plenty of water, and don't stress your liver by drinking alcohol or excessively fatty/salty foods and they will do their job just fine.

You need to eat a balanced diet for you as well as your baby. When you are breastfeeding your body makes sure all important nutrients go to the breastmilk first, robbing you of nutrients you need. While it is not as bad for your baby, it is really bad for you. Your fat stores do not contain the nutrients you need or your baby needs. It's actually possible that your body will go into "starvation mode" and actually hold on to more instead of actually letting go of anything.
Fad diets and fasts are bad or you when you are not breastfeeding, they are even worse for you when you are breastfeeding.

Nursing takes a toll on your body. You need to eat a ton more food and eat a wide variety.

I can't imagine putting your health at risk to do some fad diet that may or may not harm you or your baby. Your body doesn't need this right now.

A friend of mine observed Native American rituals very rigidly. She was an older lady and had started as an older adult. She went twice per year and did a ritual sweat? Fast? thing where she went in a structure and stayed for a period of time. I think she only drank a drink before she went in and they stayed until she was done. I can't remember what it was but I do remember they did not allow pregnant or nursing mothers to do the rituals.

It's actually the opposite, if you want your body to burn fat, you have to eat fat. Pouring sugar down your throat will not help burn fat-it will create more. Check out the "Perfect 10" Diet on Kindle-$.99-see if you believe this MD's explanation.

Unfortunately, I learned from experience b/c like you I thought i would have enough fat reserves to be able to count calories & go on a moderate diet while nursing. It didn't work out how I had hoped. My production dropped significantly & baby was very unhappy. I had to raise my calorie intake by a few hundred a day & all was good again & I actually starting losing a little weight , after raising my calories.
