What is your favorite detergent? I have been using Gain for a while now and it just doesn't seem to make the clothes smell clean. When my husband does laundry he always forgets to use fabric softener and when he does that the clothes even smell worse!

What can I do next?

I use my Shaklee. It's non-toxic, good for sensitive skin, cleans great and I only use a little bit. I do not use fabric softener at all. Just never really needed it. My clothes are soft and smell fresh.

Well, I switch laundry detergents but Tide is my favorite. As far as forgetting softener? I bought the Bounce bar that sticks in the dryer and is good for at least three months. LOVE IT!!!

I use Tide and Downy. Sometimes Bounce, depends on whether I need to line dry.

I would wonder what your washer is like. My old washer was a haven for mold. I couldn't get anything clean in there.

My mama swore by tide. I prefer gain powder as well. I think the powder works better than the liquid. I like the regular old gain! Fabric softner is downy with the pink lid. I don't buy cheap detergent. You get what you pay for! My dryer broke and I have to go to a laundry mat to dry and saw a lady put some cheap washing powder in her wash along with some pine sol and a bar of soap. I couldn't believe it! Hello! Buy decent detergent and your clothes will be clean!

I used to use Tide and then went to Arm and Hammer...both smelled good. But, for both cost reasons and for my son's sensitive skin issues I switched to All. It doesn't have a smell at all, which I know is "good" for you, but I like that fresh clean scent too! ;) Anyway, I add vinegar to all our washes to both help soften the fabric (I don't use softener anymore) and to take out some of the odor (sweat, mildew, whatever) and it works well. My clothes don't smell like detergent but they don't smell bad anymore either!

Melaleuca products are great, we have used them for years!! The pre-spot takes out stain other things won't, even hair dye ~ The laundry soap, whitener and fabric softener are excellent products. The big PLUS ~ All natural, my grandsons allergies are not a problem with these products. If you want more info on Melaleuca email me at ____@____.com.

I use Melaleuca's laundry soap it makes things smell fresh and does a great job cleaning and it is natural so it is gentle on the skin and wont cause irritation.

I use Costco's Kirkland brand free & clear. Unscented and no dyes due to allergies. I put white vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser of my washer. I throw in some tennis balls into the dryer to cut down on dry time and to fluff up my clothes. Our clothes smell nice and clean without all the perfumes. I can always tell the clean sock from the dirty one LOL
Dryer sheets leave a residue on your lint trap that you need to clean off every so often as it becomes a fire hazard. It is recommended to clean them with rubbing alcohol then let them completely dry before putting them back on as rubbing alcohol is flammable as well.
If you're using too much soap your clothes might not be getting clean and thus the reason for them smelling off without all the perfumes. You honestly only need about half as much as the manufacturer tells you to use. If you can run a load through with no soap and still get suds you're using too much soap and it's left a build up in your clothes. The fabric softener can also build up and leave a stink. Do you have a front loader? If you do check in the rubber seal around the inside of the door. Socks and other small things can get stuck in there and cause a smell that gets into the rest of your wash load. I check it after every load now to make sure nothing got trapped in there. Also with a front loader, leave the door open a crack when there isn't a load in there otherwise it turns into a terrarium for mold. Every once in a while I run an empty load on the steam setting and put bleach in the dispenser to clean things up a bit if I notice a smell creeping in. Some top loaders do better opened a crack too to keep mold from growing.
It might not be a detergent brand issue.

You might want to try disinfecting your washing machine... Yes, even for the non-HE kinds. It might help with the smell.

Tide with Bleach Alternative.

I also buy Tandil from ALDI, basically to use on non-clothing stuff (rags, rugs, etc.) but I suspect it IS Tide in disguise!
