A.K.
I would try Soy formula and add mylicon drops in the bottle. My sister had preemie twins with terrible reflux and that is what her pedi recommended.
I have an 8 month old son who has only been on the bottle for about a month, since he was weaned he has been spitting up horribly... so i am looking to change formulas but don't know where to start... any advice would be helpful, i noticed that nestle goodstart is less expensive than similac original which is what i have been using, and i have also seen parents choice... thanks in advance for any and all help!

I had great success with the Parent's Choice (Wal-Mart brand) Organic formula. It is a great price, for organic. I had the luxury of having an in-home baby nurse during the first 2 weeks I was home with my new baby. (It was a wonderful gift from family!) The nurse is the one who suggested the Parent's Choice Organic. She said they have had really great success with that formula with many of the babies they have cared for over the years. It worked great for us. I hope you find something that works. I agree with everyone else's comments here that you should ask your Dr. before switching again, though. Good luck to you!
Definitely talk to your Dr.
I had to sort of wing it because Dr.'s suggestions didn't agree with my baby either. I wound up buying Enfamil Gentle-ease and Similac Lactose free from Wal-Mart. The Gentle-ease has reduced lactose but is still milk based and it has worked great. It seems through my own investigation that the problem was a lactose intolerance.
BIG TIP-save the receipts! Even if you have opened the can, you can return them to Walmart. I had to do this with TWO cans of Alimentum (one for home and one we had at the sitters) which is RIDICULOUSLY expensive and I got my $ back.
Smaller Tip-give it 3-5 days. Sometimes the change is extremely difficult in the beginning and then by day 3 it starts to get better. In our case, day 3 was even worse with the Alimentum than the previous day which is why we dropped it. But the Gentle ease showed improvement by day 2 so we stayed with it.
Final Tip-I would stay on the same type of formula in the beginning. If you did milk-based, I would look for another milk base with reduced or no lactose in it. If that didn't work out, then I would go to soy.
Hope this helps.
We are currently using the Parent's Choice Gentle formula which is 1/2 the cost of the Enfamil and our baby is tolerating it just fine. Be sure to let us know what you did and how it worked out! Good luck!
I just read in Woman's Day or Lady's Home Journal, (I can't remember which one), that the good bacteria like acidophilus and bifidobacteria help with acid reflux, GERD and spitting up. You open up one capsule in their bottle or cereal each day. Walmart carries one called bactobifidious I believe. My sons pedi recomended it because my son had diarrea after taking antibiotics. There was a medical study and it helped with most children with acid reflux and spitting up. I wish I had known this a year ago when my son spit up constantly. I also used soy formula which helped a little. Good luck.
What worked Best for my son for his SEVERE Acid Reflux was Enfamil Prosobee which is Soy Formula. None of the others would work not even the lipil A.R
Good Luck and I hope this helps.

L.,
I would suggest Parents Choice at Walmart. Gentle formula is the one that has broken down milk proteins. Though not all Walmarts carry it and it would be a good idea to call ahead. It is cheaper and easier to break down in the tummy.
Both of my boys used Parents Choice and it worked great.
Sometimes Soy helps and sometimes it doesn't. It can cause some hard stools too.
Did your baby have any problems while on the breast?
It very well could be infant reflux or GERD.
I had a simular problem with my son and I could get results with changing his formula but only for a few days and then we would be back to square one. It would be wise to seek medical help if the problem doesn't go away or gets worse. Although, sadly not all doctors seem to care as long as the bady is still gaining weight, etc... There are medicines that could help (Zantac is what my baby is on) Some babies are just happy spitters and don't have any pain or problems other than just spitting up some. My other son did this until he was sitting up on his own.
Do some research on your own on the web. Infant refux forums are very helpful to see what others have gone through.
Hope this helped,
C.
My son had reflux from birth and the only formula that worked well was Enfamil. It's pretty much the most expensive on the market, aside from organic or specialty formulas, but it's the best. You'll also notice how much it looks like actual milk when its mixed. It's not yellow! If you're not sure what will work, try buying several brands in the smallest size they have and try them out for a couple of days each.
My daughter was both breast fed and formula fed at the same time. She would not spit up the breast milk but would the formula. We tried Soy...made a huge BM mess. We thought she had acid refulx...not the case.
Turns out she is Lactose Intolerant. We use the Walmart brand Parents Choice in Lactose Free. Made a big difference...
She is now 13 months and on Milk. We tried regular Whole Milk thinking that it was just a phase...but Nope. She has to drink Lactate Milk (Lactose Free Milk). I should of known both Me and my Father are Lacotse Intolerant.
Try that for a week or so and see if makes a difference.
Hi L.,
The best formula that worked for my sons spitting up was the Enfamil A.R. Lipil. You would only give it to your baby until about 9 mths old because if he can drink regular fluids from a cup w/out spitting uo then he won't need the A.R. formula.
(At least that's what my pedi told me)
I've also heard the Enfamil Nutramigen works great but it's also alot more expensive for the size can you get. (16oz for $24!)
~Good luck~
First, talk to your pediatrician for recommendations. My twins had trouble with digestion, one more than the other, and for us Nutramigen worked - like magic. Other things that helped were to keep the baby upright for about 20 minutes after eating to allow food to digest better, burping very carefully and frequently. One daughter had to be on Nutramigen for a long time, the other did not. But your pediatrician or the nurse should be able to give you better ideas based on his or her familiarity with your baby.
You should NEVER switch types of infant formulas (from regular to soy, etc) without talking to your pediatrician first. They may even give you a recommendation over the phone, but you should probably bring him to the office.
Our favorite formulas were Enfamil Lipil and Carnation Good Start. My daughter did not like Similac at all. We tried all different kinds of formula to see what worked best. Enfamil makes several varieties, including those for babies who spit up a lot. You should definitley discuss this with your pediatrician to see what will work best for your baby. Also, be sure to go to all of the websites (Carnation, Similac, Enfamil, etc) and register for free coupons. You will get buy one, get one free offers, offers to try different products, dollars off, etc. That is how we experimented with different brands. I am due with my second in August and plan to use Enfamil when I switch to bottle feeding, but you never know what will work... Good luck!
