Desperate for Honest Opinions Regarding Dunedin Schools

Long story short, we moved to Palm Harbor from Indiana thinking our son would attend PH schools. Okay, so we now know about and aren't thrilled with school choice (laugh). I have called everyday for 6 weeks to see if an opening at PHMS would come available, but all I'm offered is Dunedin or Kennedy (NOT an option). I need to hear firsthand experiences or even simply things you've heard about Dunedin schools. My son is going stir-crazy waiting around for an opening at PHMS and my only other comfortable option is Florida Virtual School and I am unable to pull him out of there after 28 days without him receiving F's (yikes). Help!

What can I do next?

I would look into special circumstances and see if you qualify for any. I personally attended all 3 Dunedin schools (elem, middle & high) and they were fine "back then" (we're talking 10+ years ago for high school) BUT if I had a choice, I wouldn't choose Dunedin for my children - they have grown too much and the care isn't the same, as far as I'm concerned. I know (again back then) school choice wasn't an option, but IEP was. My husband switched high schools due to the ROTC program (one school offered Navy, other Marines and his goal was to become a Marine - which he did - and so he was allowed to transfer. You can also look into IEPs if your son has any type of special needs, such as speech class, gifted program, etc. because if one school offers what he needs over another he can be placed in that school due to his IEP. But if you have had your son home for 6 weeks you need to place him somewhere, rather quickly, unless you are offically registered as homeschooling.

Dear D.,

Tarpon has a fundamental school which has a good reputation. It might not be that far for you.

I tried one charter school and it was a disaster. We are doing private school through Montessori.

Sorry, but the only schools I know about that I would recommend are the fundamental schools.

Have you tried applying under special assignment? I'm in Hillsborough County but assume Pinellas is similar. If you have a good enough reason for requesting "SA", he might be able to get into another school. There is no deadline for SA and I believe you can request any school. My son was accepted after he was denied choice. My reason was because of "hardship" due to daycare issues.
