So What Happened?

so we decided on a town that wasn't on the list. Houston. we have family there the schools are supposed to be good and if you go west the crime rate is supposed to be low. Thanks for the answers and inputs. I might actually miss the tornadoes when I leave oklahoma. :)

answers from Des Moines on

I have lived near Des Moines for quite awhile...but I wouldn't really want to live in Des Moines. I would pick a smaller town just outside. There are better schools...Pleasant Hill, Ankeny, Ames, Story City...The schools in Des Moines aren't that great. Southeast Polk is pretty good...near Pleasant Hill. Good luck!

answers from Kansas City on

I lived in a small town outside Wichita my whole life until 5 years ago, when I fell in love with a dude who lives in KC. We love KC, lots of stuff to do, very nice suburbs, etc, but I do miss Wichita. Wichita is smaller, so in the amount of time it takes me to go to work across town here, I could have gone from my small town to the farthest side of Wichita away from me. All in all, though, both are great places to live. Wichita has an awesome Cowtown Museum, but KC has the Nelson-Atkins. The school system we're in, Lee's Summit, is pretty good. I'm not scared to send my kid there, as I would a more inner-KC school. My husband was in the Shawnee Mission school district, which he loved. Wichita has a much better zoo than KC, or many other zoos that I've been to, if your family is into that. It also has better movie theaters. I really miss the Warren, AMC just isnt as good, and none of it's theaters have cry rooms.

Of course, none of that may have been helpful to you, but I would recommend KC or Wichita to anyone. One difficulty in KC would be if you or your husband got a job on one side of the state line, but you live on the other. I work on the Kansas side but live in MO, so we have to pay taxes in 3 states.

answers from Albuquerque on

Hello, I have lived in Albuquerque for 3 years and I do like it. After moving from Mississippi, it was a huge change--for the better! Honestly, though, I wish we had bought a house in the neighboring town of Rio Rancho. Albuquerque is great for public transportation, fantastic restaurants, events and museums, etc, but the neighborhoods really are hit-or-miss as far as crime and resale value. Also, I haven't heard too many good things about the public schools. We are currently trying to sell our condo in NE Albuquerque to buy a bigger house in Rio Rancho. My family lives there and the neighborhoods are generally better, the schools are MUCH better, and the overall "feel" there is better. Also, you still have the convenience of going into Albuquerque with just a few minutes' drive. Only complaint about RR is the morning/evening commute to/from work! I did it for 7 months while I lived with my parents (when I first moved here) and it was a hassle. It would take 45min to 1 hour to drive the 20 miles to/from work! The weather in Abq is wonderful, and we only get a few snow days each winter. I think there are like 300+ days of sunshine each year and even the summers are "mild" (by Mississippi standards: 100+ degrees, 100% humidity, hurricanes, turrential rain storms, mosquitos, etc, etc).

New Mexico as a whole is a beautiful state. There are lots of areas to visit for history, art, science, outdoors, etc. If you would like more information, please feel free to message me (or email: celinaphelps at gmail dot com).
Good luck!

answers from Des Moines on

We live in Johnston, Iowa and my husband is a police officer in Des Moines. As far as schools, we are very happy with Johnston and there are many great schools in Des Moines. The city is growing and we have many learning opportunities for kids including Science Center of Iowa (SCI), the Des Moines Art Center, and Blank Park Zoo. All offer classes for kids. As far as crime, we still have that, but our crime rate isn't horrendous. If it tells you anything, I'm comfortable with my husband's job, but wouldn't be in many cities.

I can't speak to the availability of jobs, I work out of our home. I did just read that Pioneer, one of our largest employers, is possibly expanding and adding 400 jobs. If you moved into a suburb (Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale), the commute isn't bad into Des Moines at all. I hope this helps a little. Good luck!

P.S. Kansas City also has a lot to offer and our kids love to go there, but it does have more crime since it's bigger.
