Deodorant for a 5 Year Old Boy?!

My beautiful son, who just turned 5 at the beginning of October, has just started having body odor! My husband and I gave him the lowest dose antiperspirant gel that we had until I can get him just plain deodorant with no aluminum zirconium in it.
Does anyone else have small children with body odor? What did you do about it? What do you use for him/her? Any success with all natural stuff like Tom's etc? His 5 year check up is in December and I plan to ask the pediatrician, but until then I'm turning to you! Thank you!!

What can I do next?

There are deodorants that are good for the kids. I bought one for my daughter when she was 9 since she needed it sometimes. It is by JV (jvdeodorant.com). What I suggest is to avoid antiperspirant. Any pediatrician would say the same. From what I read and from my discussion with the pediatrician, antiperspirants are not good for children. Also, a shower in the morning helps as well. Good luck!

I don't know if there is any truth to this, but I once heard that nobody (including adults) should have body odor--and that if you eat/drink healthy enough, you won't have any. I don't believe this, since the odor is caused from sweat mixing with bacteria.........but it got me to thinking that maybe your son isn't drinking enough water?? Just a possibility.

As far as deodorant goes...I've been using a salt crystal that I bought from a natural market in town. It's called "Amazing Thai Crystal Deodorant Stone" or something and it says right on it, "over 1 million sold" so I'm sure if you google it, you'll find it. It's "all-natural"...just a stick of salt. All I do is get it wet and apply. It works REALLY well!!! It was expensive (I think $8?) but I bought mine over a month ago and it doesn't look like any is gone yet. (and I use it 1-2 times/day...before exercising if I go to the gym and always after a shower.) I would try this for your son before using an antiperspirant. :-) Good luck, mama!!

I have 5 children - 4 boys and a girl. My girl is the one who started needing an occasional spray of deodorant when she turned 5. It's more so in the summer but not always. And it's that odd BO funk smell that my oldest son had when he was a teen. It freaked me out! I bought her a can of Soft N Dry in a pink spray can. When she has a day when she needs it I give her a quick spray and smells like powder. Girls hit puberty before boys and earlier these days, but it's not unusual for boys or girls to start having some "symptoms" early. It happens. I wouldn't stress it.

Try switching to organic milk, if not already. When I was school I did a research paper on the correlation between milk and early puberty. Honestly, I'm not 100% convinced but enough that my kids have been on organic milk ever since.

Sometimes changing his diet can eliminate or reduce body odor.

My son does use Tom's of Maine , It's works somewhat well. However, that is also because my son drinks LOTS and lots of water.. which in turn, helps your body flush out. I think a lot of smells stem from the foods we eat. Although, hormones definitely play a role. Try the Tom's .. it's not overly strong. but also have your son drink more water IF he already doesn't. In our house, it's the urine test.. :) if it's running too yellow, then you aren't drinking enough water, if clear, then you are good to go............ :)

best to you and yours

When my son started that (at about 5), I switched to organic milk and it really made a difference.

He's now 8 and still uses Toms or (occasionally) Axe body spray.

My daughter started wearing deodorant about age 6. People kept saying, don't feed junk food, it's because of the hormones etc... in meat and dairy, but we buys as much organic as possible and don't eat meat or fats food/junk food. I think she's just an early bloomer.

We love Tom's, and we just make sure that she washes well at shower time. It also has opened the door for talks about her changing body and the importance of good hygiene.

I use the all natural stuff for myself and my teen daughter and it works for us. I use Melaleuca but I've also used Tom's and deodorant stones which work GREAT!! With deodorant stones, it's a natural stone that you get wet and use like regular deodorant. I used it for years. The only thing is during the summer I'd have to reapply more often than the Melaleuca or Tom's deodorant. But it might work great for a 5 year old. Good luck!
