When (how old) and where do you take your children for their dental and vision needs? I live in the Overland Park area, and I am looking for caring, child-friendly reccomendations.
Thanks, A.

Hey Girl,
It's me! I take the girls to Dr. Donna Thomas. We love her office, staff,her...they are all great. I have always understood to take the kiddos once they have teeth. Just for a check up. But by age 2 for sure. Many problems can happen prior to age 2. It's good to start them early just so they will get used to going. Then we also go every 6 months for their cleaning appointments. Dr. Thomas' office is one of the VERY few that actually have dental hygienists to clean the kids teeth, a lot of pediatric dentists have dental assistants do the cleanings. This is not a good thing. Only dentists and hygenists can clean below the gum line, assistants are not allowed by law. They do this because they can pay an assistant a lot less money. But what's crazy is that they will charge your dental insurance the same. Anyway, I highly reccomend her office.
As for the eye exams....your pediatric doctor should do screenings in their office. But it's a good idea to have an eye doctor do an exam no later than age 3. Most will do it for free...it's call "Infant-see" program.

I take my 6 year old son to Indian Springs Dental Clinic off State and I-635. It is a small drive, but they specialize in children and my son loves to go.

I came across this website. You can search dentist in the local area, along with reviews http://www.completedentist.com/

My son had his first dentist appt at the age of 2. I took him to a family dentist right off of College and Highway 69.
They just did what he was comfortable with and didn't force anything on him. He ended up letting them clean his teeth and whatever else they needed. They had a T.V. with cartoons on, but he tointerested in what "cool things" they had.

We haven't done the vision test yet. My eye doctor said they normally recommend bringing them in around 5/6 unless you think your child is not seeing properly.

I go to the Smile Salon on the Plaza (I know that isn't the area you are looking for), but they are wonderful. Dr. Kunstadter, ###-###-#### 801 W. 47th St. Ste. 110 KC, MO 64112. They love children and they actually encourage you to bring your kids when they are little. Aiden (my son who is now 8 mo.) went with me when he was just 2 months old. they like them to get used to being there at an early age. Another bonus, you can get free chair massges while you wait. They also have a massage therapist on staff, it's kind of a spa like atmoshere. If you decide to go let me know beforehand. I will give you my name b/c we get free stuff when we referr customers. ____@____.com. Thanks and good luck.

My daughter had her first appointment with a Pediatric Dentist at eighteen months. Her next appointment is in October. We use Dr. John T. Fales on 13469 S. Arapaho Dr., Olather, KS. We were refered to him by our dentist Dr. Stone. Most regular dentists won't see a child under the age of three. Dr. Fales was great and the offfice is decorated in a finding Nemo theme with fish tanks and murals everywhere. I had a hard time convincing our daughter to come out of the play room when we were finished.

I'm not sure what age is recomended for taking a child to the eye doctor. Our Parents As Teachers parent educator gave our daughter a simple eye and hearing test after she turned two. If you suspect your son is having vision problems ask your pediatrician for a referal.
