Hi Yall, I'm six weeks along with my third little bubba (I lost my second from a miscarriage) I have a hygene appointment scheduled (during my first trimester), what do you think? Should you have dental work done during the first trimesteR?

What can I do next?

Your dentist will be able to advise you as to what procedures can or cannot be performed during pregnancy.

Cleaning is fine, but would not recommend anything more than that while pregnant. Especially no fillings. Some kids are especially susceptible to toxic substances such as mercury used in dental fillings etc. You don't know what your fetus may have susceptibilities to so best to be safe. The first trimester is a critical time developmentally. Best to be safe.

Absolutely! I went in about the same time and you are. I told them I was pregnant and the made a note in the chart to make sure no xrays were done. The rest was smooth sailin. The hygenist also commented on the importance of keeping up cleanings while you are preg. Apperently there are infections you can pass to your babes and your saliva changes. I dont remeber the details but you should ask your hygenist during your apt. Im sure she could fill you in. Enjoy the cleaning!

I agree, definately go, but make sure to tell them like the mother above said and if they do need to take xrays, they cover all ove your abdomen with like 3 of those xray mat things, you know what I mean? Anyway as long as it's not extensive xrays, everything should be fine. My daughter turned out completely healthy.

Having worked in the dental field for 20+ years, I can honestly say that having your teeth cleaned is no problem. Let them know you do not want any x-rays (they usually don't encourage that anyway). If they do find anything (cavities) that needs attention, ask if it can be put off until you deliver. If it is urgent, see if they can do a temporary filling. That should hold until after baby comes. Good luck.

I had a cleaning in my 1 st trimester than one right befor I had my daughter. Everything went fine. Also what does your dental office say. Sometimes they don't do anything to you until you have the baby.

its perfectly safe to have dental work done throughout your entire pregnancy, you just can't do x-rays. i had two root canals when i was pregnant with my son, and all is well.

My mom has had route canals done while pregnant and never had complications. Talk to your doc and dentist if you're worried about it though, I'm sure they'll have info for you. You can also check out www.webmd.com and look up info yourself too. Good luck!

Hello, My whole family is in the dental field and I was just discussing this with my OB last week, It is very important for you to have your teeth cleaned while pregnant. Your gums are very sensitive and bleed more during pregnancy. You are also more prone to get mouth related problems. If you do develop problems and they are not treated, even decay it can cause comlications in the pregnancy. I get me teeth cleaned every 3 months while pregnant instead of every 6. Of course tell your dentist you are pregnant and do not get any x-rays.

You should absolutley go. Be sure and inform the dentist and no new xrays. I had trouble with both of my pregnancies and my doctor said that there is a link between gum disease and pre term labor so always be sure and see your dentist on time and follow your normal dental care regime.
Good luck and congrats on the pregnancy.

Getting your teeth cleaned and inspected is fine. Just make sure they know your pregnant before you go in the room and they will skip the xray. Local anistetics are fine, and most antibiotics, but if they need to do work on your teeth besides clean them talk to your OB about what they will be doing and what medications they will need to use before you go through with it. ttyl ~V

Here is my situation. Form pregnancy I lost my calcium because milk made me sick and those prenatal vitamins tasted and smelled like milk. couldnt take them. well my wisdom teeth came in while prego and pushed all my teeth together. broke some becasue of all the pressure and with my son I had migranes because of the pain so I was on loratabs witch is the strongest pain pill safe for the baby. Well in between my kids I did'nt work and had no insuranse so i could'nt do anything about it until after my son. by that time I had 3 absess teeth and all my wisdoms pulled along with one of the absess. I now have major teeth problems. If it was possible during preganancy i would have definatly done everythign I could but because it's not I'm probably going to have dentures by the time I'm 30 years old. I know this sucks but there is no other way to do it. you have to wait till the baby is born if you need cavities filled or anything done with pain medicine. Just make sure that you drink plenty of milk. there not kidding about that stuff. it really does happen. Oh and dont drink POP! the carbanation eats at your teeth like acid. what the bubbles do to your toung is nothing compared to your teeth and because you can't feel it you don't know.

You shouldn't be concerned as long as you are just going in for a cleaning and no X-Rays. If you aren't having any problems then there is no need for the Dentist to do X-Rays. I am 7 1/2 months prego and I just went in for a cleaning. They told me that they wouldn't do X-Rays because I'm prego.

If you are having problems with your teeth and you need X-Rays, they say that it is better to have the work done than allow something to get worse and possibly turn into an infection. However, I would discuss your situation with your Dentist. I had one Dentist that tried to push me to get X-Rays while I was prego. I explained to him that I would have to leave if that was the case because there was no reason for me to have them done. He finally said that he could do the X-Rays the next time. Well I never went back to his office because he kept pushing it.

Hope that helps a little.

First thing is call your denstist and tell him that you are pregnent, tell him how far along you are and see if you will need any kind of xrays. If he can do some work without an xray then maybe you can still go,I know that when I was carrying my daughter they said to NOT go to the denstist. But again just call and ask qustions that is the best thing to do.

You can get a cleaning but stay away from anything else until your 3rd trimester. I got an x ray. They used extra coverings over my belly to protect my baby. If u r in pain and need x rays it will be up to your dentist and your baby dr. My baby dr said that not getting xrays and taking care of the problem could be more harmful to my baby. Something about cavities producing toxins that get into your blood stream. So if u have pain it could be serious, let your baby dr know and see what he says. I had xrays and a cleaning in my first trimester. I went back and had 5 cavities filled in my third trimester. They only used a small amount of anesthetic. So if u a willing to tollerate a little pain to take care of a problem that could be harmful to your unborn baby then do it. Bacteria in the body is not ok for u or your baby. Oh by the way everything is fine and my baby is healthy.

Go get those whites sparkled up some. Let your dentist know you have a bun in the oven and they will make sure you keep on smiling. Trust the dentist he/she is just as educated about baby safety as your family doc. They won't let anything happen to their future patient. Very bad for business. Go ahead get your pamper on!
