Okay, so my 17yo son and I were both recently told we needed root canals and crowns. When my son went in for his crown they told him they couldn't do it until he had a "crown lengthening" , they also told me the same thing and it just so happens I heard them tell a 3rd patient the same thing while we were there. Now I've had three crowns already and and never needed a "crown lengthening". What's up with that? Anyone else go through this?

Melanie E is correct. My dentist told me the same thing last month when he went to replace an existing crown. Once he drilled the old one off to see what was happening to the tooth underneath, most of the tooth shattered (it was dead and x-rays indicated decay or something was going on). "crown lengthening" on a new crown was one of several options he discussed with me as a replacement. By the way, I have 7 crowns and this was the first time I was told about crown lengthening too.

Crown lengthening is a relatively common procedure. Just because someone has never heard of it, does not mean it's not legitimate. It's performed when there is not enough of the tooth exposed for the crown to adhere to. If you think that the dentist is not being truthful, get a second opinion from someone else.

Don't know what that it - and have 4 crowns myself. Ask the dentist, and based on your lack of confidence in this one, I'd get a second opinion before you go through the experience and pay for it! Good luck.

The guy sounds like a scam artist and you should probably find a new dentist.

Get a second, maybe third opinion! I changed dentists years ago and she said I needed all of this work done, after she verified that I had good dental insurance. She made sure to schedule it before the end of the year so my deductible had already been met. Well, she made the mistake of showing me my drilled out tooth which totally freaked me out, so I went back to my old dentist without getting the other work done. He examined my teeth again and said he was really sorry to say but there was nothing wrong with my teeth and I didn't need any work done, the drilled tooth had been fine and the others were, too. This was about 10 years ago and (knock on wood) I have had no problems and no other work done. That other dentist was just out to scam the insurance company and drill out my healthy teeth in the process!!!
