My son is 8 years old and has had stainless steele crowns for a few years. He went to the dentist this past October and received a good check up. Tonight he had a melt down saying his crown was hurting (this happened while he had two friends over). We had brisket for dinner so I had him brush and floss but it didn't solve the problem. I saw alot of redness all around the base of his crown. Do steele crowns get removed when the child could have a permanent tooth emerging or do they fall out like a normal tooth? I never even thought to ask and can't find anything online that answers that question.
Thank you ladies! After some Ibuprofen and Anbesol he was better. I will watch it though and might be scheduling a dentist appointment. Better safe than sorry, I don't want to pay for braces if I can help it! :) Thanks again!
Don't have answer to your crown/new teeth question, but I would have him swish warm salted water in his mouth to help clean and heal the irritation. I have a feeling he's got some brisket in there somewhere. Hasn't had popcorn, has he? Those kernels can really get wedged out of sight.
Maybe some Tylenol in the meantime? Hope he feels better soon.
This exact thing happen right before Christmas to our 9 yr old daughter. The crown had been loose for about a month and then she started complaining that it was hurting (she saw the dentist in Oct and everthing was fine). I called the dentist as soon as I noticed that the gum around the tooth was really red. They saw us the next day and extracted the tooth. The crown was loose enough for food to get stuck underneath and she had the very begingings of infection. Now that the crown is out of the way her "adult" tooth started to come in. And as soon as it was out the infection cleared on it's own w/o meds and she has had no other problems.

His permanent tooth is probably coming in. My 8 year old went through the same thing last year....she never said anything and the permanent tooth came in nearly sideways trying to push the capped tooth out. She did have to get the capped tooth pulled b/c it didn't fall out on its own. Permanent tooth came in straight after that.
I understand your son's case may be different but it seems like the obvious reason for his tenderness in that area. For some kids the tooth may just fall out but in my case, and maybe yours, it will need to get pulled.
If this is a front tooth it is normal, however the back teeth do not usually come out until 11-13.
