Dental Cost?

I just had a root canal done with a cost of 900.00 then I went back to my regular denist for the crown to be done. The cost for the crowm was 1050.00 when the denist was doing the crown he said he had to do a core buildup because the previous filling was very large and deep. When I went to pay at the end there was an additional charge for 250.00 for the core buildup! Is this legal? Shouldn't that be covered with the original crown cost? I have not paid the 250.00 yet so anyone with any advice on this matter would be helpful.

What can I do next?

Hi! Unfortunately, no, the core buildup is not included in either the root canal or the crown cost. The crown preparation includes shaping the tooth and fitting the crown... not building up the tooth and/or placing a post (which often goes along with the core). I worked in the dental field for over 6 years, and this question came up frequently. I'm sorry that you had this unexpected cost... dental work is so expensive!

That is all about normal cost, unfortunately. And its never covered in crown price.A good dentist would have told you this when he did root canal, as that is when he would have known. Its such a rip off, crowns and root canals a few years ago used to be less than 900 for whole deal!! I hope your tooth feels better. I bought some insurance for my last crown and root canal, called compdent, it was 130$ for a whole year, and it made the procedure only cost 1500.00 . Look into it if you need another one!

Crappy? Yes
Illegal? No
He should have discussed the possibility with you and you can tell them you are pissed, but you will have to pay. Dental work is just awful isn't it??

That price is about right for a root canal. Since it's done by an oral surgeon and not your regular Dr., your regular Dr. probably didn't know about the post/core until he was "in there". My husband went for a root canal recentley only to have to go back again 3 days later because (oops)that wasn't the tooth that was giving him the pain after all. No discount for the wrong tooth... Dental is very expensive! That's why they only work 4 days a week. I have to disagree w/ the lady who talked about her brother deciding he'd rather have his tooth pulled. Yes, that cost is about 90 bucks, but that would only lead to other problems. With an empty space there, the rest of the teeth would eventually start shifting. And why would anyone prefer dentures just to save a few bucks??? YUK! Your smile is the 1st thing people see when they look at you, or when you look at yourself in the mirror. To me it's worth the cost. Usually the office will work out a payment plan. I'd ask. Good Luck!

Sorry, but the costs are legal. That is if you were made aware of them up front. You should have signed a estimate on the cost before the procedure. If the cost was more than $50.00 over the estimate, then it is illegal. Good luck with your tooth. My brother had that done and after a couple of years the crown fell off and had to be replaced. He said he would never have a root canal or crown again. That he would have it pulled instead. He has more money in his mouth then what some cars cost. He would go with dentures if he had it to do all over again. I have never had any work done at the dentist that I didn't sign a estimate before hand. That is where people make mistakes because without that estimate they can charge you what they want and you have to pay it.

Wow, that doesn't sound right to me - he should have told you. Who is the dentist? I'll make sure I don't go to him.

I would write a letter to him stating that he quoted you 1050 and should have seen the 'core buildup' - after all he is the expert - before quoting you the 1050.

Good Luck!

I have had alot of crowns done. The core buildup is extra, however, I have never been charged $900.00 for a root canal. A root canal usually costs around $600.00 and a crown around $900-1,000. I believe you have been overcharged, but the regular dentist fees seem reasonable, but whoever did your root canal overcharged you.

Yes, my root canal cost $800 about 2 years ago. Then the crown was about $500 or so. I'm sure the price is right. Dental insurance is a joke. Vision/Eye is even more of a disappointment. Sorry you have such a high bill. I hope your teeth are better. I know hot and cold foods were an improvement to me.

Having many dental problems and regular visits, i can say no that extra charge would not be included in the price of the crown as that is an extra procedure other people wouldn't need. The $1,000. covers the mold, the tooth and ordinary installation (special glue) and it included the temorary crown til permenent one was done usually. I paid $400 for one with insurance 20 yrs ago. The price you paid was about right plus the extra amount. If you were to have had a filling replaced for a hole that big, you would have paid the 250.00 to have that done. Aparently the dentist felt that the thin walls of your tooth were not strong enough to hold the crown without the danger of breaking someday. He saved you alot of money for later down the road.Root canals, weaken the tooth as i had it done and then a crown later when tooth broke. He should have told you when he got to the point that he discovered this extra procedure needed to be done in addition to the cost of the tooth. If he didnot tell you and explain the extra cost, then you might have legal recourse. But if this problem was not visable at the time of the original estimate you should have signed, then it wouldn't have been included.

Hi A.,
I experienced a similar situation. When I had a root canal, my dental insurance did not cover the 'core buildup' and I received a bill in the mail for the additional cost after I paid my bill at the time of service. I didnt expect to have to pay more money!!! I checked with my dental insurance carrier and they verified that 'core buildup' was not covered.
Hope this helps,
J.

yeah, similiar thing here. I went for three teeth pulled, and he went to pull the fourth, i said I didnt bring enough money to do that! he said, oh dont worry about it. its been five years and i still get the bill for it every three months!!!!

If it was Coast Dental, call and complain to the main office. Other than that, theres nothing you can do. Sorry.

PS I know a WONDERFUL oral surgeon in Cape Coral if you need one!

I just had a crown done and they charged me 1195.00. They didn't say anything about core buildup and I know they had to build it up because it's a baby tooth. I would dispute that.
