Decorating Tshirts for Kids/big Sister Presents

I am having a babby in 3 weeks and I have 2 older daughters. We wanted to decorate some tshirts that say big sister on them, then a onsie for their new brother. I have never done this before and am not very artsy! I know stores sell fabric paint and stuff but I was just wondering if any brand was better than the other. I dont want to wash the shirts and have them come out looking awful before they get to wear them!

My second question was what kind of gift to get the girls from their brother? I was gonna take them shopping and pick out a small toy to give him at the hospital but I also wanted to give the girls something small from their brother. Or should I make it a gift from me? My husband and I are getting divorced so I want them to feel involved as possible. I was thinking a new barbie or a book. Any ideas or something else you might have done for your older children? Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

I did a "Big Sister" zip-up hoodie for my daughter when my son was born. I am not a good artist, so I got iron-on letters and spelled out BIG SISTER on the back of the hoodie and used an iron-on decoration of a bunny mama with baby on the front lapel area. The letters I got at WalMart and the other iron-on design at Joann Fabrics. I used masking tape to make sure the letters were lined up properly (put a line of tape where the bottom of each letter should rest).

Best wishes on your delivery!

Any of the fabric paint is pretty good, just make sure that you put cardboard or something thick like that in between the front and the back of the shirt, during and until the paint has dried completely, otherwise your paint with transfer to the back.
As far as gifts go, the girls will eventually out grow a Barbie doll. I would go for something more sentimental like a charm bracelet, which your son can add new charms for them at Christmas or birthdays.

I have used many different brands I think the trick is not to wash the shirts with anything other than your soap-no softerners to begin. I usualy let the shirts dry on the line for several days then do the prints. Also let the T's dry for several days before they wear them and wash the first few times in cold water, by hand is even better and again line-dry. How about adding the girls hand-prints to their shirts. (When they outgrow them turn the shirts into a stuffed pillow for their room. There are many books at book-stores that talk about divorce-this might be something you need to get and read with them often! You are going to have your hands full very soon with three so this is something you need to do now-don't wait and don't put it off at all-it will be hard enough with those 2 AM feedings and the sisters won't help you then. Weather you believe it or not the girls are very much involved in the divorce and should be talked to and taught about love all the way thru this. Wait with the barie dolls till later like Xmas-that should be a special treat and then they may want to get a "skipper" (I think that is the little brother doll). And most important watch out for all those very little shoes and stuff with your barbies they can be swallowed. Good luck Mom and Family

My daughter was 2 1/2 when my son was born last summer. She received a book from her baby brother...I'm A Big Sister by Joanna Cole...with an inscription from the baby..."Kinsey, I'm so lucky to have you for a big sister. Love, Your little brother, Matt" It's a great book that enumerates the joys of welcoming a new baby to the family and the advantages of already being "big." When I read it to her, she always makes sure I read the message from her brother. It was really fun to hear her quote the book in the months after he was born... "He's too little to eat pizza, and apples, and ice cream."

I also bought her a kid sized Moby wrap...I knew I'd be carrying the baby in a Moby wrap, and she loved mimicking me, and carrying her own baby dolls in the same way.

As for keeping the girls involved...there are lots of ways they can help, from bringing you a burp cloth for the baby when you need it to making the baby smile when he's crying. As he starts to move around and get into things, have them be the official toy testers and decorate empty toilet paper rolls for them to test the size of toys for him to play with. Example, Barbie shoes fit through the toilet paper roll and are too small for him to play with. Blocks do not fit through the opening and are safe.

Good luck!

you can get at office max shirt transfer sheets. Also get like a print master program and design your own big brother shirt print of the the design with the shirt transfer sheets and iron them on the shirts. Go to michaels and pick out shirts. I am not sure about the onsies I don't know if they have thoses you may have just to use one out a pack from babies r us. But the shirts at micheals are cheep and durable. I run a stork business and made them for all 4 of my kids and i made them like 5 - 6 years ago and They still look good. no holes nothing and the kids where them all the time. So I would suggest that for the shirts. Now for the gift you could do id bracelets have them ingraved with there name and than on the other side have them say big sis or big bro to and put the names on it.
