CCCS Consumer Credit Counseling Service is legit. I worked with them earlier this decade and got my debts payed off. They are a part of a parent company, United Way, I think.

I can't tell you how much Dave Ramsey (www.daveramsey.com)has helped us and our finances! I say if you can manage it, check out Financial Peace University. I would even check on Ebay for a older cheaper version if you need to. I paid about $80 for it. You'll be amazed at how quickly you can get out of debt without the use of a third party. You can do this! Please hear my heart and know that in no way am I judging you, because my husband and I are currently paying off debt as well. But until you get to the source of why you are in debt in the first place, debt settlement will only allow you to free up money to be back in debt again. Please check out Dave Ramsey's program and you will see that you can live debt free for the rest of your life and never have to worry about creditors anymore. Because I can see how his program works, my passion now is to help other people get out of debt. I have already helped several of my friends and church members. As an example, my husband and I paid off over $5,000 of debt within the 1st 30 days without changing our income at all. Please let me know if I can help in any way. I am so passionate about it and I would like to help everyone I can. And I don't cost a penny.

Hi M.,

I am also a Mamssource member and I have a debt settlement business. Here's how it works. We can only accept unsecured loans, such as credit cards. We only handle five thousand dollars and up. Our program will guaranty you a write off of 45% of your total debt (that's almost half!) then I will work with you to determine how many months (we do up to 60 months) to repay the remaining 55% of your loan plus our fees. We can also repair your credit when your done repaying your remaining debt. Please call me at ###-###-#### or ###-###-#### so that I can answer all your questions. I live in Florida but I can work nationwide.

I would steer clear of Debt Settlement companies- they have high fees and by the time you pay them you are way overdue on your bills to your creditors- it would be better off just paying your creditors. Credit Counseling is a better way to go- but before you even do that I would suggest calling your creditors and asking them to lower your interest rates. That is all Credit Counseling companies do and then you pay them a monthly service fee. So just do the work yourself and avoid paying the fee.
I hope that helps.

Beware, the ones you see on the internet and hear about on the radio are usually scams. We got taken by one company, and the atty we spoke to told us he knows of no legitimate companies doing what they say and advertise. Good luck.

I'm not sure of a consolidation program at this moment but I recently learned about Primerica, and they are excellent at helping you save money on the expenses that you already have as well as get debt free. I'm not involved at all with Primerica but I sat down with Carlos Magana ###-###-####) and he was very helpful in showing us the savings that we can have by tweeking a few things in order to eliminate our credit card debt. I think it would be well worth your time to at least check it out. Regards....

M.,

There are no legit Debt Settlement companies. The only thing I would suggest is to get a loan from your bank or credit union.

My back ground is 19 yrs in the Finance & Mortgage Industry and I have spent the last 2+ yrs in the Credit Restoration Industry - so my first question - is your debt still with the original creditors? Or are you trying to pay off 3rd party collection companies?

My cell is ###-###-####

just be practical and don't pay people to do what you can do yourself when it comes to your money. that sounds crazy i am sure, but listen, as someone who has counselled many soldiers and later on, employees about debt, i know. First, make yourself a budget and see where you are, find out where you putting excess on things not necessarily needed and delete that action now. second, call your credit companies and ask to settle and they will usually give you way below pay off in these hard times. this works with credit cards too. Contact your creditors and ask for a plan, tell them you are feeling the brunt of this economy just like everyone else, that you want to pay your debt but, you are not able to make the payment as it is, they will work with you, communication with creditors will take you a long way, they need and want your money, and you want to take care of your debt.
If any creditor threatens you or are unreasonable, call the consumer protection agency or get the on the internet. There is also a consumer credit protection agency. Tell them what happened when the creditor would not cooperate or accept your offer, they usually will try to mediate or find loopholes for you. These are pretty much the same thing debt managers do, but they charge you a fee, and don 't really get you out of the debt you are in. I don't care what agency they are, it is all the same. Use your head and do not get caught up in these types of things, you made the debt and you can resolve it without other agencies or people who are in the business of abolishing your debts by handling your money and making money off you while they are supposedly helping you. Pray, God will guide you if you open up and ask Him. Tell Him where you are with your finances and ask him for prosperity for yourself and your family. Now, keep in mind that prosperity may mean a means to pay your bills and keep your basic life essentials and not necessarily a windfall of major digital proportions (smile). Talk to him just like you did in your request, you know in the scriptures He says, it pleases Him to bless us. He wants to. Ask his blessing and his guidance and always keep him in the equation. I promise you, you will not go wrong.

Do not hire a debt management company. 99% are scams and involved in class action suits. They take your money and negotiate with the credit cards companies. But not to your advantage.
A phone call to your credit card company will get you nowhere fast, too. You must write them and explain, briefly, your desire to pay off debt and retain a good credit score. If you are able to pay one off (take the largest balance) then offer one-half to settle.
Sitting down with anyone (lawyer, accountant, debt management company) should be because of a "free consultation". but don't sign right away. This is how you get an education.
I will be happy to go into more detail with you or any other moms out there.
Blessings, S.
