My 1 and a half year old has nose bleeds every week. I don't know if this is due to the dryness in Colorado or if it is because my kid doesn't want to eat and might lack potassium or other substance on his body. Please help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I talked to my doctor's nurse and they recommended me the Infamil liquid vitamins. We also talked to the daycare teachers. I will begin sending food to the daycare in hopes that he eats food he's used to eating at home. We have the humidifier, so we'll use that when neccessary, but the nurse also recommended a little vaseline on each nostril. We'll also have him checked. Thank you so much for your kind responses.
Regards,
A.

Dark green veggies are a big help with nose bleeds--when he starts eating more solids! Good luck!

Hi A. O

I am a nurse & a lot of things run through my mind when I think about reasons for nosebleeds. Of course, it could be something as simple as dry air (which is true of CO) but I doubt that it has anything to do with lack of potassium especially. Too low or too high K+ causes seizures. However, because your baby is not transitioning to table foods easily I would definately recommend staying/or getting on a multi-vitamin maybe liquid if he won't do chewables. Another thing to keep in mind is that kids always go through phases where they eat everything in sight & then seem to want nothing but they usually always go back to hunger again (signifying a growth spurt). Sometimes they drink too much liquids & feel full all the time so they don't care for food. I think the multi-vit is important because they need calcium for proper bone/teeth development & health. I could go on & on. I would also recommend taking the baby to see a doctor regarding the nose bleeds if it's been going on for a long time. Could be something as important as blood pressure or something as simple as the tiny blood vessels being too close to the surface of the top of the skin inside the nose (which changes over growth times). It's hard to tell. I wouldn't hesitate to let him/her see a dr regarding that issue.

If you dont already, you should make sure and have a humidifier in his room while he sleeps. Colorado is really dry and nose bleeds happen a lot, especially during the winter.

Hi there A.,

That certainly is a lot of nose bleeds. I would be concerned too. You really should get him to the doctor. There's no way to tell if it's just dryness or if he's having some vitamin/mineral deficiency unless a doctor can take a look.

Good luck!
