I feel like an awful Mom right now. My grade school daughter was fighting a cold and not acting like herself - heavy congestion. No red flags. Then yesterday she said her ear popped when she blew her nose and complained it was hurting. So we started the Motrin. She was pretty uncomfortable all night - esp due to the congestion and her ear. (No fever, no ear drainage, just tired, loss of appetite and post nasal drip kind of cough, sometimes spitting up the phlegm.)

Today she was so tired I kept her home from school. She woke up crying saying her ear hurt again. So I gave her more motrin and asked her if she need to see the dr. We got an appt. The dr checked her out and she got diagnosed with a DOUBLE ear infection and strep. HOW DID I NOT KNOW!!!!

Uggh. I'm glad she's sleeping now and that we could afford to get her to the dr and get her the meds and some fav foods at the store. But I'm still feeling like somehow I should have known.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Mamas. At least now I think I know what you look for in her throat.

Don't feel bad. You did what any good mother would have done. You tried treating it at home with what you had and then took her to the doctor when you needed to. Don't feel bad sweetie..........she's getting rest now and that's all that matters. :)

Look, don't beat yourself up. Some kids are more stoic than others. I've got O. of those! It's gotta be pretty darn bad before he FINALLY says something.

the easiest thing to miss has always been strep. why? it barely has any symptoms, exceptfor fever, and even that is iffy. some have low fevers, mine spike with strep. last time i had mine sick i was 100 per cent positive it was strep. wayyy high of a fever. nope, it was flu. and i didn't even think about flu being a possibility.
BUT
of any of my kids say my ear hurts, i take them in to be seen right away, even if it means a trip to ER

Don't feel bad. My 4y was fighting a cold - stuffy nose, cough. Cough got worst. Took her in to an Urgent Care at 7p for a chest check cuz she was getting raspy
they said 'lets check for strep'.
What? she's drinking fine, doesn't say her throat hurts, she's not eating, but she's a picky eater and her belly full of gook. We think she has a chest thing, not strep!'
Let's check anyway, its going around....
5 min later, the test came back positive for strep! She also had a slight ear infection.

mine had a double ear infection for god only knows how long. sometimes they just don't show symptoms. Mine never played with his ears, slept fine, never cried no fever nothing showing any indication of an ear infections let alone a double ear infection. It just happens don't beat yourself up over it.
