Daylight Savings Has Screwed up My Son's Naps

I need some advice on how to help my son adjust to daylight savings. He is almost 1 year. No matter what time he goes to sleep, he ALWAYS wakes up at the same time. Pre-daylight savings, he would go to bed at 8 and get up at 7. Now, he goes to bed at 7:30 and gets up at 6:15. We tried to keep him up so he'd wake up at the new 7am, but he just woke up grumpy same time as usual. I know this is a little hard to follow with the pre/post daily savings references. Any advice would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I am dealing with this issue as well with my 11 month old. He is starting to adjust but it may take a few more days. I never had any problems with my first baby so this is new to me and I agree it is not fun getting up so early. I am just putting him down at the normal times according to the clock and it is helping. Good luck with you little guy.

I know it is hard, but be patient and slowly adjust each day by a few minutes. As counterintuitive as this sounds, you may want to actually put him to bed earlier. Don't make major adjustments; just slowly change the times by like 10-15 minutes.

One thing that really helped us was adjusting the 'nap'. Our son is on one nap a day and at this and the last time change (21 months this time, 13 months the last time...two naps then) we just let him have a longer nap(s). For example, yesterday he went down for him nap a little earlier (because it *felt* like 12:30 to him, when it was really only 11:30) but let him sleep til the usual 3:30.

You might also want to try letting him fuss a little bit at 6:15. We did this when my son would wake up at 5:45 - too early, plus we knew he wasn't getting enough sleep. Finally, try consulting "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Dr. Marc Weissbluth. He is a Chicago area pediatrician who specializes in infant and child sleep issues with over 30 years of research and studies involving infant/child subjects.

We moved our kid's bedtimes 15 minutes each night before DST ended and by Sunday night, they seemed to be on a regular schedule and slept until 8:00 as usual Monday morning. Maybe go back to "pre" time change and try it 10 or 15 minutes at a time each night for a week.

I have zero advice, but wanted to thank you for posting this question. My 11 month old is having the same problem (well, it's not her problem, it's our problem, because we don't want to be waking up at 6!) but it's good to know how others are dealing with this, and that it's not just us--but it completely makes sense. No one told the babies that the time changed, so they are still on the same schedules. Good luck!

Its only been a few days it will right itself ... take a deep breath and don't worry about it. Be fleible and keep doing what youare doing. Keep him up to the correct bed time and eventually he will adjust no biggie

I don't have any advice but I wanted to echo some other moms & say thanks for posting this. My 17 month old is also having a hard time adjusting, we've been up at 6 (instead of 7) every morning for 3 days & it's not fun. And then he's cranky because he's not getting enough sleep. I'm trying to be patient & adjust his bed time a little as others have suggested. Just wanted to let you know that are others out there feeling your pain. Good luck! :-)

You need to adjust slowly to the time change. Go 10 min later each day and by the end of the week your child will be adjusted to the new time. So, day 1 you put to bed at same time as old time. Then day 2 you put to bed 10 min later then day 1 and so on for the rest of the week. That is what we had to do on the farm to get the cows adjusted to the new time and it worked like a charm. Good luck!

Julia,
I don't have any advice but I just wanted to let you know that I am dealing with the exact same thing. My 10 mo. goes to bed with the new time but wakes up at the old time (one hour earlier). I think I am going to try to let him fuss for awhile in the morning to see if he will go back to sleep. Of course, my husband hears him and gets him out of bed despite me telling him not too (he just wants to see his son before work). I can't blame him for that :)!!! Hope everything works out for you!

I have to agree with the other post - about both the strategy and the book recommendation. It has only been 2 days - - try to give it some time! Your little one will adjust to your routine. I also tend to use this change to my advantage - a little earlier bedtime (because it seems like the old 8:00 or 8:30) means more time for me and hubby to spend together!
