Daycare - Is This Normal?

We have been blessed with a fabulous daycare/pre-school at m y place of employment for the last year and a half or so. But my employment is soon going to end (my choice) so I am touring new daycare providers, since we will loose eligibility for our current spot and it is also too far to commute.

I have toured a center yesterday, and while there were a couple of issues, I would have probably overlooked them if it had not been for one thing - and I am just wondering whether this is just me being paranoid/having too high standards or whether this is normal:

When we visited the room my daughter would go to they were having storytime. Just instead of reading a story to the kids, the teacher showed them the pictures in her book while the story was blaring (loudly) from a stereo. This is a young group, the stereo was located on the side of the room and the kids clearly had trouble focusing, not knowing which way to look. It was the oddest thing I have seen in my dyacare experience so far, and I know I should have asked, but I REALLY don't understand why she wasn't reading to the kids herself. Do other places do this?

On a side note, if anyone can suggest a nice daycare (full time care) in the creater North Seattle Area (Ship Canal North up to Shoreline/Edmonds) I would be very grateful.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

At my daughter's preschool they mix it up. Sometimes they do recorded stories and sometimes they read aloud in person. The CD versions/audio stories tend to have really good narrators and/or music (think Peter and the Wolf) that contribute to the experience.

I can't comment on the "blaring" aspect of the audio.

You might want to ask them why they choose to use audio recordings, and if this is something they always do, or if they also read aloud.

I have never heard of that but you could always ask either the teacher or the director (gently.) Like the previous poster said they probably were trying to mix it up, but I agree with you, it does sound really confusing. I know for myself personally, I would rather hear a story from the same person turning the page, just because that sounds overwhelming.

Former K-1 teacher here and this is my advice for looking for a preschool. Go with your gut. If something bothers you, it is not the right school for your daughter. Look elsewhere.
