Daycare Doesn't Call When 6 Month Old Throws Up

Actually you should be grateful the daycare DOESN'T call you every time he throws up! Lots of places have a policy where you get called only if the child is feverish, or has other symptoms of illness in addition to throwing up. Sometimes kids just gag on their toys or get choked up on phlegm. Daycares realize the children are there so you can work, and want you to be able to maintain your daily routine if at all possible. Especially for the little ones, throwing up is rather commonplace. All you should have to do is ask the day care teachers to call you to give you an "FYI" if your child throws up. Then you can ask questions to determine whether or not you want to come and get him.

WOW ok i am also a child care provider and I have to say I disagree with Amanda, firstly I change the children if they spit up on themselves at all, to me it's just the normal course of things i keep several spare outfits on hand for the little ones i keep. So basically if your son seems fine even though he did throw up, i would guess that it was the same way while he was at daycare, and it isn't as though they didn't tell you it happened. they jsu used some basic disgression i regards to weather or not he was really ill enough to bother you at work. By all means if this bothers you talk to them, but had they called and told you that yes he spit up in their words but he was behaving perfectly normally and didn't seem to actually be ill, would you have rushed to go get him or trusted that should he actually be sick they would call you back? I've had this happen with my own kids at school,and yes the school always calls but normally if the kids are ok i don't bother to go get them unless the school asks that i do, the school is smart enough to know if the child should be there or be sent home but they have to notify the parents, unlike school though the daycare sees you every day and can notify you of things at pick up ect. I hope this makes some sence, but by all means talk to them if you really have a concern and see what they say, chances are he was fine and they didn't therefor think it was something that couldn't wait, but if you would like them to be quicker to call you then let them know that. good luck

I understand your concern..I have a three year old little girl who has been in daycare since she was 7 months old. When she was little she did have the reflux, where she would throw up after either right after or a few mins later. She wasnt sick, we just needed to put something in her formula - we used barley - which is what helped her to keep her food and formula down.

I am an in home daycare provider, and my answer would be YES!!! The daycare should absolutely been notifying you if your child is sick. You are paying them to care for your child so that you can work and make a living - and that is their JOB!! I keep in VERY close contact with all of my daycare families because for the most part, I am their primary caregiver. The children spend more awake time with me in my home than they do at home with their parents. I would definitely talk to the daycare provider and tell them that there has to be an open line of communication, if they have a problem with that, I would say FIND A NEW ONE!!! My daughter's daycare would not let her come back for 24 hours after throwing up. If it is just formula spit up then they might not have called because that is pretty normal. Otherwise most daycares do not allow kids back for 24 hours after incidents like the one you explained.

Maybe a good idea to contact another daycare in the area and ask what their policy is.

if day cares called every parent every time a kids threw, fell and got a booboo, had a tamtrum, then theyd never get anything done...such as caring for the children. and you'd never get anything done either because you'd be constantly on the phone with the day care or having to leave work to go pick up your child. six month olds, or jsut babies in genreal, do spit up alot. sometimes enough to require a clothing change. if he seems to be feeling ok, playing & eating ok, and no fever, then you shouldn't worry too much. i think if a child vomits more than 3 time in 1 day then the day care will call. is throwing up out of no where or is it usually after he eats. is he starting solid foods yet? babies have very small and sometimes very sesitive tummies.

I am new to the website and read your concern about your 6month old. I am a grandmother and a mother of 2 grown children. Both of my grandchildren also had a problem with throwing up, especially after eating. We found that both grandchildren had what is called "reflux", which will cause the child to throw up and sometimes can cause projectile vomiting. If you have not already asked your pediatrician if this could be the cause, it may be worth asking. I know your request was on 2-1-08 and this is now 2-18-08, I hope your child is doing better.

Hey B. I see your concern here. I would have to agree with some of the other ladies that the child care is there to care for your child. As long as there is no fever or cold sweats your baby will be fine. Now about the throwing up My son did the same thing at 6 months I took him to the doctor and he ended up having acid reflex which is very common at that age. Ask your doctor about it they will ask you a few questions to determine if it is than they will give you some medicine to give him before each feeding. Another thing I have come across with my children is lactose and tolerant. maybe he has an alergy to the milk or maybe they don't fix it like you do. These are just a few suggestions. He could be a happy spitter - that's when a baby spits up a lot but it doesn't seem to bother him. My son was a HS from 3 -9 months and it sucked. And yes, at daycare he sometimes would spit up to the point where they had to change his clothes.

I doubt your child is actually throwing up and likely spitting up. And, like the other posters have said, if daycare called parents every single time a baby spit up, well, I would have been called 10-15 times every day. It's completely unnecessary to call every time a child spits up because there is likely nothing wrong with them.
