I recently in January took my seventeen month old son out of in home day care to a facility so that he could get more of a social interaction, but since i have put him into the facitlity he has been sick EVERYWEEK, either its a cold, stomach flu or ear infections.. I can't keep on taking off work every week and I was wondering does this faze ever end, if its the day care center, or if he is just high susceptible to germs. I was highly contemplating putting him in another day but i don't want to keep moving him especially since he is just now starting to adjust with his peers and the teachers. Any one have any advice

What can I do next?

Flaxseed oil is great for ear infections and to boost the immune system as well as other issues. My best-friend put her (15 month old) dght on it 2 months ago and she hasn't had a problem with ear infections or getting sick since. She hear from a lady at her job, in which she heard it from her Dr. I truley beleive vitamins are a big part too, I have been giving my son vitamins since he was a baby ( liquid vitamins in bottle)and he is now 11 1/2 and has been sick twice. Good Luck

Hi C.,

I had a similar situation. My son just turned a year old when he went from staying at home with Grandma to going to a daycare. The first 2-3 months it seemed he was getting ear infection after ear infection (I think he had 4). What made it worse is he has a reaction to penicillin that makes his body spot up real bad and omnicef gave him a nasty diaper rash, but that is another story, lol.

But don't worry, ever since those first couple of months, he hasn't been sick but once. My daycare is really good though about getting the parents to pick up their kids if they have a temperature. I have had a couple of those calls though, but knock on wood, he hasn't had an ear infection in over a year now.

It will pass! Hope this helps ease your mind some.

Vitamins and Baby Shampoo!

It happened the same with my three when I put them in daycare. I took them to a nutritionist to help them build up their immune system. Now they take vitamins and he also suggested things like not eating heavy after dark, a fiber filled breakfast (oatmeal, granola cereal), cut out sweets/candy/etc. Also their pediatrician suggested getting baby shampoo since it kills germs as compared to regular soap(it can be no name brand- same thing) and use that to bath them, wash their face/ears/nose and whole body every night to wipe put any germs that might be trying to "get in". Between both of these, they have not been sick since.

Also do make sure the daycare is sanitizing and that they have strict rules of leaving your child home when they are sick.

Good luck to you!

My daughter spent her first two years with a runny nose :-( People insist on taking their children to daycare even though they are sick. It isn't him! The word is that once he begins school, he will have built up an immunity to most of the common stuff that goes around.

I ended up taking my kids out and staying home with them due to the same thing. My children were always sick. There was times that my baby(1 year old) caught things and I would have to take 3 weeks off of work because of it. After the 2nd time, we decided to keep him at home with me. My oldest son was in daycare since he was born, and we had the same issues with him. He know is 5 and in kindergarten and it seems to be better, but I think the daycare with so many kids is what brings the germs. My kids went to one of the best daycares in the county and they were very clean, but they still got sick.

If you decide to change him, maybe try a stay at home mom with a child or children your sons age. Less germs and he will still have someone to play with.

yes, unfortunately that'll happen. I used to work at a center, and i was always sick. Now i run my own at home, and all the kids have a round of sickness now and again, but its not as often, as bad or as long, just kinda a little cold, or 24hr thing. I make sure EVERYDAY when they leave that i sanitize the toys, the tables, chairs, anything they touch or put in their mouths! It doesnt take long, ask them if they do that.
I wash mine AND THEIR hands after changing diapers(sometimes they like to reach down). And i pretty much constantly wash my hands and i teach them to COUGH INTO THEIR ARM instead of their hands!!!!! this helps keep germs from spreading too.

Good luck and just give it a little time, his immune system MIGHT build itself up and it'll work out.

I have recently put my munchkins in daycare and sickness is a huge concern for me also since I am a single mother that works full time. My daycare has a requirement that all kids have to wash thier hands as soon as they come into thier rooms (my twins are 23 months old so I help them wash), and that seems to make a huge difference. My kids havent been sent home sick once-knock on wood! Every room in the daycare has a child size sink and all the kids wash thier hands in the mornings and also when they come in from recess. Maybe you could suggest to your daycare that they enforce a similar policy?

Hello
I had the same problem when I put my daughter in daycare for the fisrt time. She was 13 months old and started getting sick just about all the time. It was so frustrating!!! but after a few months, and I have to say it was reall about 6 months into it, that being sick was decreasing. Now she hardly ever gets sick. It's because they are no used to being around other kids/germs.

Welcome to the wonderful world of daycare facilities!! My kid has been in one (3 days a week) since January and has been sick non-stop since. He has been on three differenct antibiotics, had numerous ear infections, and now has a terrible cough. They (the owner) has told me that it takes a good 6 months for a little one to build up their immunity systems if they've never been in a daycare setting before (daycare germs. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this happens sooner.

Hi C.. Same here. It's normal. My daughter started at a STATE OF THE ART NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED program. The kids are constantly sick. They are always washing their hands, constantly sanitizing, etc. BUt like some of the other mothers have said, it just takes time for the kids (and you) to build up your immune system. Again, you have to do what feels right to you and what your lifestyle can accomodate but my doctor assures me that its normal and ok at this point. Also, I feel strongly that the benefits that she is getting from being in that setting far outweigh the someone regular colds. She plays right through them. So, at least for now, I'm just dealing with them. I'm also a single full time working mom so I understand the issues with missing work. I don't know what your support system is like but I do have to rely on my mom at times to take her overnight if there's a day I absolutely cannot miss. If you want to talk more about it you can send me a direct email. Take care and good luck.

Each child is different, immune systems included. As long as you feel the school is doing a good job at sanitizing (if you don't know their policy on cleaning toys and how often etc. - ask) washing of hands is very important as we all know, when you arrive wash their hands and wash them before you head home too. I work in a day care setting and as mentioned some kids seems to get more illnesses than others, my daughter sucks her fingers, we went thorough a lot of sicknesses with her as an infant but now her immune system is pretty tough. I am a firm believer in following your instincts, if you are happy with the school and your kids like it try sticking it out and see if it gets better. If you have other concerns maybe you should consider other options, but kids get sick their immune systems are new too! It has to be difficult for you so you have to do what is best for you and your family. Maybe talk to your pediatrician and see what he advises. At any rate I wish you the best a healthy spring.

That is extremely normal. My daughter has been in daycare since she was 10 weeks old and has caught just about everything at one time or another. I am told it helps build their immune system as an adult.

She is 3 and a perfectly healthy child.

I am a Certified in home daycare provider and have heard this same story for 17 years now. The problem with Centers is that they do not have enough staff to do the cleaning. It looks great they have their sanitation solution but not all toys that are chewed on can will go in. I teach a preschool Monday, Wednesdays, & Fridays which I have a few toddlers that come just for that and then I have my normal daycare kiddo's and we just got our very first cold this year. I have always had a healthy daycare and hate when I hear it is only in home daycares that make their children sick, no matter where the kids go they will get common colds but being sick always probably is not good.

I have operated a home day care for over 10 years and the children are sick maybe 1 or 2 times a year. I also worked in a daycare for 7 months and the kids were always sick. I had to quit because I was getting sick alot. I recommend putting your child back in a home day care. It doesn't matter what daycare facility you put him in, he is going to be sick all the time.
I hope this helps in your decision.

C., girl, I feel your pain. I put my 2.5 year old twins in daycare back in November and it's like, they are ALWAYS sick. Someone suggested that I try Airborne, which is something that helps stop colds and such. I'm gonna try that. I'm sure the phase will end, just give it time.

hey C.,i too understand what your going through i went to work at a daycare and brought my 2 year old with me,let me tell you i worked for about 4 months i had to pull my son out ask my mom to watch him he got so sick with an ear infection that took him over a month to get better and tubes put and a adenoidectomy too, after going through that and over $1,000 surgery i quit and decided to just stay home with him and try agin when he turns 4 now my daughter did fine when she was in daycare so i guess it just depends on the child and the center but my advice to you is put your son back in a homedaycare, less kids, less germs and more one on one interaction for him,i hope this helps you?

I am a former home child care provider of 15 1/2 years. I feel he should not go to a center until he is at least 4 years old. I am working at a center now temporarlily and the ratio is way too high. I feel centers have to high a ratio unless they are a private facility that keeps lower ratios. When he was at the daycare home how many children did she take care of and how often did he get sick? Just remember, more kids more germs.
He will build up immunities as the others have said.
If there is anyone there that has siblings that are in school, forget it, when there in school it's very previlent.
Hopefully work can be understanding.

It truly does get better as yuor child's immune system gets stronger. However, kids do pass infections to each other quite easily in a group setting such as daycare, particularly during the winter months. You can't prevent it entirely, unless you switch to a nanny or decide to stay home yourself. But there are steps you can take to minimize the chances your child will be ill.

First, proper handwashing- purell hand sanitizer is a good source. It is never to early to teach your child the techniques of good hand washing.

It is important to ensure that the center or preschool you choose should have an established and well-enforced policy of not allowing sick children to attend.

Lastly, make sure that your child is eating healthy foods and taking vitamins. My son loves the welch's fruit snacks- packed with vitamin c and only 80 calories.
