Hi Mom's,

I am in need of some advice regarding my little one not drinking much milk. She used to love milk, especially when it came from the bottle. When she was about 12 months, we already had her down to only drinking milk from the bottle about 3 times a day. She drank 3 bottles 9 ounces full each day, sometimes more. On her 15 month checkup her doctor said it would be best if we took her off the bottle. So that's what I did. Cold turkey and she did great. Now she barely drinks 1 full cup a day. I am not worried for nutritional sake, she eats very very well. So my question is, Does anyone have any advice on how to get her to drink more milk? I have thought about buying some straws. She loves to drink out of them. Please let me know. Any advice is welcomed.
Thanks in advance.

I have two kids and they are very picky with their milk. I used to worry they weren't getting enough, but the doc told me that if they eat yogurt and cheese (other dairy products) then it's fine. But like you I still wanted them to drink milk.

My kids drank their milk better if I added chocolate to it. I use the nesquick powder because I don't have to add a lot. I would also make them hot chocolate with milk. Well it wasn't necessarily hot, but warm. It helped them drink their milk and their doc said that the chocolate wouldn't hurt anything.

Good luck with this. Sometimes too, they'll associate that drinking milk means it needs to be in a bottle. So if it was recent that your daughter came off the bottle, that may be the reason she doesn't drink it as much.

My girls are exactly the same, my son on the other hand would drink a gallon a day if I allowed it. But what I do for the girls is I give them maybe 1/2 a sippy cup of milk sometimes less, during breakfast and again at dinner other than that they drink water all day. I would still encourage her to drink milk it is a good easy way to get calcium and vitamin d. And if a straw works than great but honestly for some reason my girls love milk they just don't drink a whole lot not even water! It can take them quite a few hours to drink a sippy cup of water sometimes. She just maybe too busy now.

My son doesn't drink milk. Period. My only advice is don't stress.. she gets calcium (and protein) from other things.

She's not a baby cow, so don't worry. She can get calcium and protein from other sources (which she will actually absorb better anyway). Water is the best fluid to make sure she doesn't get dehydrated. As long as you're watching the protein and calcium, there is no reason at all to worry.

I used to mix Ovaltine with white mix for my son when he was little. Ovaltine has vitamins and tastes good. Good luck!

Hello Kiki,

as long as you're meeting her dietary needs with other foods, don't worry about it. The only reason they say we need to drink 3 glasses of milk a day is because of the protein in the milk only let us humans absorb 1/3 of the calcium in the milk. go figure! check out www.nomilk.com for some tips/recipes on other calcium rich foods. you don't have to agree with all that's on that website. just get the info that's helpful to you. (smile)

you may want to make sure she's getting a vitamin supplement w/ vitamin D and get plenty of sunshine. good luck! ~C.~
