This site is such a great source for moms! Has anyone's child had a rash called "molluscum contagiosum"? My daughter developed a strange rash on her torso that looked like little pimples and they spread slowly. We took her to the pediatrician and she gave us a medical term for it. From all my sources it appears very benign but slow to resolve (5 years per one article) and it seems to be getting worse. Any input? Thanks!

Hi,
Both of my sons had Mulluscum Contagiosum. My youngest first got it during the summer and we were told he may have caught from the local swimming pool from another swimmer. It can last, from what I researched, up to 3 years. He only had it 8 months but it was all over his torso, arms and legs. If the blister like wart busts it can spread. My boys like to wrestle and I think that's how my other son got it. It has an incubation period of about 3 months, so one may have it and not know it. It is a contagious virus in the wart family. My oldest son only had it about 5 to 6 months and not as bad. I ended up getting a perscription for Elidel (cream) b/c my youngest itched alot and busted them open. The cream helps soothe if itchy. I had to tell our school so it would be on record and they could apply the cream. Online I did find a site that claimed to have a faster healing process, but I just let it run it's course. It can leave large patchy scars, but niether of my sons ended up with any. I think the younger you are the faster it runs it's course and less scarring. That's about all I can remember, it was a few years ago. Hope I was a little help.

J.,
I had it when I was young. The Dr. eventually freezed them off. That may have been extreme, but I had 40+ bumps. If you google it, there are alot of sites that can give you more info.

Hi J.,
From what I've read, the treatments sound worse than the disease. How distressing. But since it is a virus, one option is to get your daughter's immune system in tip top shape and let her body heal itself. It is a wonderful process and one that works so much easier than most doctor or prescription intervention. If you'd like to learn how to accomplish this, I'd be glad to help. Two of my sons had this. One got it from the other. The first dr. advice we received was to let it alone, that it didn't cause any problems. But it is ugly, and will continue to spread if left untreated. We finally got a referral to a dermatologist who used acid to burn them off.

My 6 year old daughter had this when she was 4. we didn't know anything about it. the doctor said there were things we could do, but they sounded painful- he told us that more than likely she would outgrow it. she did. about a year later it stopped. i have two others that never caught it from her. the doc said that she could spread it other places on her body, but with no signs on the boys, they would more than likely not get it. and they didn't. it sucks- but it doesn't hurt them, hopefully yours will just outgrow it. good luck!

My son had it. We have no clue where he got it. I can't even remember when it started. GRATEFULLY he was not/is not a scratcher so they didn't spread far. My doctor gave us aquafur with hydrocortison cream in it. She said it was safe to use on the whole body. I don't think it really helped...except for my dry hands :) I remember his took forever to heal. We went as far as going to the dermatologist after him having it for 18 months (which is the 'normal' time length according to my sons doc.)Good luck!
