Daughter Waking up Through the Night

Hi All,

My daugther is 18 months now and all of a sudden she is waking up once or twice a night. She's done that for about 3-4 nights now. I am not sure what is going on with her. I try to console her, give her warm milk (she doesn't want that) and then when I try to lay her back down, she cries and cries. My husband went in last night and turned her night light out and she finally went back to sleep. This was around 2AM. Not sure how long I can last...very tired.

What can I do next?

She may be having issues with her ears or be teething, but my almost 2 year old is going through the same thing. Some theorize that when kids are going through a phase where they are learning new skills rapidly, they have a hard time settling down to sleep. Also, make sure she is getting the right amount of sleep. Not too much during the day, but still enough.

I'm going to say she's either got teeth coming in or possibly an ear infection.

Somethings up with her. It could be teething, it could be her ears. It doesn't sound like a growth spurt, otherwise she'd be drinking her milk. Try the teething pills (Hylands) and perhaps some motrin before bed to see if that helps. Good luck!

She may be teething. It takes a few months for the canines to come in. Get her some Hylands teething tablets. At CVS and Tom Thumb, you can get them OTC. At Target, you have to get them from the pharmacist. Don't know why. They are all natural and just help them relax.

Also, the more fuss you make over them, the longer it will continue. As long as she isn't sick... just go in, make sure she is dry, put her immediately back to bed, and tell her it is bedtime. Walk out... She will be fine. My daughter also sleeps with music on, so that might also be another option.

GL!

Sounds totally normal. I had the same thing inexplicably occur. However the other moms all had good insight as to possible causes. Run through the usual list of possible causes: teething, gas, not enough sleep during the day, hunger, growth, change in bed time schedule or activities. If none of these things seem to be present, is there anything different in the room? A new night light or nighttime noises? If there is no night light then you may want to consider a very dim nightlight to see if she just doesnt like being in the dark. Try to note the time as if she is waking on "on schedule." Since comforting her seems to alleviate her anxiety, it may just be a new routine she wants to develop. Be careful about this becoming a habit with her. I think the important thing is to comfort and reassure her but try and ger her back to bed as soon as possible. Hopefully it will blow over in a couple of days.
