Daughter's Bad Habit - Lees Summit,MO

My 4 year old daughter has a nervous habit of biting on her nails. I noticed that her nails were very short and weren't growing and then I noticed that after she performed a song or danced or something else, she would stick 4 of her fingers in her mouth and bite on her nails. How can I get her to stop? I've told her not to do it and encouraged her to grow her nails out to be long and pretty but nothing is working!

What can I do next?

I bit my nails all the way through high school. My parent's tried several things but they didn't work. It wasn't until I went to beauty school and began doing nails that I stopped biting them. I wonder if taking her for manicures or teaching her how to care for her nails might work.

I bit my nails until I was well into adulthood and still do unless they have been manicured professionally. It's a habit that is very hard to break. Painting, all the goop that tastes bad, etc., none of that works. The best thing to do at this age is to keep them trimmed and make sure that any rough edges are filed. She's not really old enough for a professional manicure, but doing one at home once a week would be a good way to encourage her to stop. Rough edges and dry skin around the nail are what keep biters biting. When mine are longer, I won't mess with them, but if one gets broken, it becomes a problem.

why not try painting them, little girls love to have their nails painted. Maybe even take her into a salon and have them do it...explain to them she is trying to break the habit. Maybe make that the reward for not biting them is her getting to go and get them painted.
