Daughter Looks to Be Itching Her Vagina

My daughter is 20 months old and for the past two nights I have seen her reaching in her diaper and looks to be scratching herself. She just took a bath those two nights and that seems to be the only time she has done it. Any advice? Does anyone think she might have an infection possibly?

What can I do next?

Avoid bubblebaths and like the other mothers have said switch soap. Try using either Aveeno wash or Johnson & Johnson baby wash, (the one in the pink bottle). You can also add a little bit of baking soda to the water. Worked for us!

If she seems to only be scratching after a bath but not at other times, then it is probably not an infection. Sounds more like irritating soap. I have to use baby wash on my daughter because everything else irritates her. I actually had to use Aveeno sensitive wash for the first 3 years. The tissue in that area can be more sensitive and dry out more easily than our skin can. I would try sensitive baby wash and a little A&D ointment in case the tissue is cracked a little due to dryness.

try changing soap, but it also may be, how should i put this, she may be exploring. my daughter use to do that also. my boys do it but they started younger. talk to you doctor, make sure she is not doing it so much that she is irratating herself but don't scold. my 21 month old son does it in the tub. and sometimes reaches in his diaper to do it to.

It could be the soap or it could be exploration. My daughter is 16 months and every time I take her diaper off she grabs at her vagina. She's not so much itching as exploring. She's not going as far as sticking her hand down her diaper, but she is very curious about what is down there. She maybe doing it at night because that is when you are usually winding down and she is not distracted by other toys so she is thinking about it. I'd be surprised if it was the soap or wipes unless you changed them recently.

She could have a yeast infection-it happens. Her pediatrician would know.

Try switching soaps and avoid bubblebaths - I've heard they are actually very irritating for females.

Also let her play in the tub first then wash and get her out so she is not playing in dirty soapy water. Dr. Bonner soaps are also a very gentle soap. Good Luck
