Daughter Learning to Take Care of Hair

My daughter is 6, only about 3 months from turning 7. She has finally found an interest in brushing her own hair and putting it in a ponytail herself. She also tries to braid her ponies' hair.

I would like to get her some things for Christmas to help her learn and practice. She already has her own hairbrush and a collection of hair bands and bows. What would be fun and helpful for her?

Thanks for any suggestions!

We have the American Girl doll , Julie, for my 9 yr old. She has long straight hair and my daughter braids her hair and brushes it with the AG doll brush. You can also get the hair kit for AG dolls which comes with a brush, barrets and rubber bands and a book on how to do different styles and a DVD. If you just wanted the kit they sell them at Barnes & Noble. HTH!

I'd ask her what kind of accessories she likes for her hair. My daughter (9) is very into headbands right now. So she wants those. She also asks for clips so she can just dlip her hair to one side or the other.

Were getting our girls 18 inch dolls (the target equivalent of American girl dolls) and outfits that come with the matching outfit for tbe doll (Kmart has them for 40% off this week). That way they can style the dolls hair and they're own to match. Target even has a dill that comes with a little salon chair.
Our 8 year old also has the American girl book "the proper care and Keeping of you" which has sections for haircare, body care, etc. This encouraged her and made her feel a little special-since she sometimes "hates" being the oldest.

I still do the kids hair in the mornings before school. The reason why is I have a small spray bottle from Sally's that I keep on hand with water and a few drops of Tea Tree Oil in it. I use it every morning when getting the kids ready for school. Tea Tree Oil repels head lice, they don't like the smell and since it's oily they can't lay eggs on the hair shaft. If they get on the kids they often will just drop off.

So I always just spritz their hair and style it myself. I imagine I will do this until they are out of elementary school. Just so I don't have to deal with head lice.
