Daughter Having Gas Pains at 16 Months

Hey there Moms,
My daughter as an infant had terrible gas. She grew out of it when we switched from the breast to the bottle at three months. But lately she has been waking up in the middle of the night crying from gas pains. It only happens once in awhile but it still upsets me that I am unable to do anything for her to prevent it. She is too old for the Mylicon, and honestly I dont want to give her medicine daily for a problem that only happens once in awhile. Regardless I want to know if there is anything else I can do to prevent this. Thank you...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to all of you that responded to my request. It turns out that there is a correlation between my daughters constipation and her gas pains. Knowing this the Dr. put her on Kondremul, a lubricant and so far so good!

J.,
Keep a log of everything she eats and try to see what's causing it-wheat, dairy, beans, some veggie, etc!

hi J. my son also had a lot of stomach issues when he was young. I was told to give him a little Chamomille tea (NO honey!) and it helps. if u want it a little sweet u could put Karo Syrup but its probly better plain. Hope it helps.

Hi J. -

There are several herbs you can make into a tea and give to your daughter with her meals and before bed. Each has shown to reduce the formation of gas in the gastrointestional tract. You can purchase the dried herbs at Desert Sage Herbs, Whole Foods, Sprouts or any other health food store that carries dried herbs. Before buying your herbs, make sure they were grown organically or wildcrafted responsibly. The herbs you can choose from include: Chamomile, Lavender, Lemon Balm, Fennel, Spearmint and a little Licorice Root for sweetness. You can use these herbs individually or in a combination - about 1/4 to 1/2 cup with meals or before bed time. To make a tea, boil your water and remove the pot from the heat source. Add 1 teaspoon of dried herbs (1/2 tsp. Licorice Root) per cup of water. Cover the water and allow the herbs to steep for 5-10 minutes. Strain the infusion and serve warm.

I like all of the suggestions about finding a specific food or food group that is causing the problem. Common gas producing foods are cabbage-family vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, kale, etc.), spicy foods, dairy foods, and soy products. You might keep an eye on those groups as you are tying to pinpoint the cause of her pain. Mylicon or Gripe Water (herbal product with fennel and ginger available at many supermarkets and at Vitamin Cottage) are good options for relief when the pain does occur.

I wonder if more fiber in her diet would help. It may be some intolerance to dairy. The gas medicine may be helpful to use only when she is suffering, and you wouldn't need to use it everyday.

It sounds like something in her diet. My now 6mo would get horrible gas along some other symptoms until I found out that when I ate dairy or egg products it made him sick. So while I'm bf I've given them up and he does fine now. A lot of kids have dairy intolerances. Keep a food journal and see if a common group of foods are consumed around the time she gets the gas ( within a day or so). HTH

She could be lactose intollerant. Notice if she suffers more when she has a lot of dairy products. Also, if you are giving her apple juice, stop and see if that helps. Been there with two boys.

Why do you think she's too old for Mylicon? It's based on weight, not age. I still give it to my 4 and 5 yr olds when they have occasional gas. Maybe you're feeding her gassy foods. Maybe think about what she ate on days that she's gassy and try to make a food connection. Food allergy?

I just finally caught up on reading all the mamasources from the past couple weeks. My girlfriend in OK has an infant having the same problem with gas and constipation and the doctors told her to give her apple juice believe it or not and she said it is working. Since her baby is so small she is only giving her an ounce a day but you may want to try giving her a little apple juice a day.. Worth a shot

Good Luck

my son went thru this and I gave him mylicon when it was really bad but then it happened once a while so what I would do was lay him on the couch on his tummy and just rub his back and it worked for him. Good Luck!

My suggestion is watch everything she eats from dinner til bed and find a correlation. I've had to do it with all four kids so far. Cow's milk is a likely suspect, both homoginized (sp?) and hormone fed cows have been culprits in my family.

I have had much success giving gripewater - a natural intestinal aid that you can buy at any health food store. Also, I give my kids a product called Flora Baby - it is an enzyme powder which aids in digestion and seems to keep away problems such as gas and constipation. Simethicone drops (Mylicon) are still good to give for immediate comfort but I would recommend the others for preventative measures. Good luck!
