My 20 mth old daughter got sick Wed night she only vomited once. Since then she has had no real appetite and has had diarrhea. I know that there is a stomach bug going around. Problem is she will not take pedialite-liquid,popsiciles or even if I mix it in juice. It is like she knows it tastes different. I have cut the milk out. Need some advice as what else to do or I will have to take her to the doctor. Not sure what else they could do either for her.

What can I do next?

My son has had diarrhea for a week and a half now. I took him to the Dr today. He told me to go to the pharmacist and ask for Florastor Kids. It is a probiotic that is available without a prescription. You either sprinkle it in a drink or in the food. He also gave me a trial sized jar of Enfamil for toddlers that is a soy based milk. It looked like a formula can of powder. I haven't tried it on him yet. That is to substitute for the milk. He didn't tell me to give him any special pedialite drink or anything. Just make sure he drinks and if he needs milk to use what he gave me and to make sure he is peeing. Hope that helps you to avoid going to the Dr.

My daughter had the same thing happen to her when she was about a year old. I am not trying to be dome and gloom but, you need to be careful and make sure her pee diapers maintain the same amount. If they start to decrease in the amount of pee diapers (or if she is potty trained the number of trips to the potty decrease) you need to call the doctor or go to the hospital. My daughter was hospitalized for a whole day because it started off as an ear infection. They gave her a different antibiotic and the antibiotic gave her severe diarrhea. Within a day of having antibiotics she got a stomach bug and she lost her appetite completely. Then my husband and I couldn't get her to drink or eat ANYTHING. Finally when I did get her to drink she threw up three times and I noticed her pee diapers started to decrease so I called the pediatrician right away who said he would see me at the hospital. She became so dehydrated so quickly they had to give her IVs in her tiny hands and she wasn’t allowed to move or anything. It was the most miserable experience. I NEVER want to go thru that again. If you can make a game out of getting her to drink then do it. When we left she still didn’t want to drink anything. But I made up different games and did silly things every 15 minutes or so to get her to stay hydrated. Luckily she didn’t throw up anymore. My pediatrician said if pedialyte doesn’t work then try Gatorade. Good luck.

The best rehydrating electrolite drink is Coconut Water. You can get it at Whole Foods or Chamberlains in a can. It tastes naturally sweet but doesn't contain the sugar, corn syrup, vitamins, food dye, and all the other junk in Pedialite and Gatorade. It's $2.00 for a 17oz can.

Hope she feels better soon :)

How old is your daughter? Is she eating food yet?

Gatorade is also good.

If she is eating "real" food you can always try the BRAT diet. Bananas, rice and/or rice cereal, apple sauce, toast (plain). You can also give her acidophilus capsules emptied in her beverage which helps restore the "good" bacteria in her tummy.

My daughter is 2 and she had diarrhea for 2 weeks. It eventually went away. She had no other symptoms.

I would still call the nurse and let them know what her symptoms are and what you are doing. It never hurts :)

Hope she gets better soon :)

My daughter was the same. Never cared for the pedialite in any form. Anyways .... her doctor and the hospital gave her gatorade when she became dehydrated. They said it was the best for them. Also, they had me give it to my 1 year old when she got a throw up virus. Mine liked the orange flavor best. Good luck.

Keep those fluids in her and try everything--if she won't take pedialyte try different gatorades, and if she wont drink that--try WHITE grape juice--apple juice and regular grape juice will just add to the problem--but water doesn't give her enough electrolytes back--so keep it up.
Not eating is normal, but only offer her the BRAT diet--Banana, Rice, Applesauce (applesauce is good-apple juice is not) and Toast....
Looks for signs of dehydration since babies can get dehydrated easily:
•More than six hours without a wet diaper
• Urine that looks darker in his diaper and smells stronger than usual
• Lethargy
• A dry, parched mouth and lips
• No tears while crying

if she has any of these symptons, call your Dr immediately.

When my son was sick we had to almost force down liquids using a medicine dropper and then broke out the bottles (he was your duaghter's age, but had been off of bottles since 12 months) do whatever you can to keep the fluids in her....
