My 5 year old recently had the flu which turned into a ruptured ear drum. She was prescribed the highest dose of amoxicillin for 10 days. During this time she began to constantly sniff. We blow her nose but there is nothing there. Could this be a side effect of the drug?

So What Happened?

Well the prescription ran out but it has continued on and now includes a kind of post nasal drip snorting. I've been looking for a good ENT doctor as this is not going away...

No one here will know - that can be anything from a continuation of the symptoms to a habit to tourette's. You need to call your doctor.

Not a side effect, she might have an allergy to something that has just bloomed. She might also be dried out like crazy due to heat in the house and not having enough moisture in the air.

My kids have taken a lot of antibiotics including the one you mention. I don't recall that side effect. You can Google side effects to see if it is, or ask the pharmacist. I always get a big long sheet of possible side effects with our meds - if you still have that.

Would it not be more likely to be part of the flu/fluid from tubes (nasal, ear, etc.)?

When my kids were sick, the fluid from nasal passages always ended up in ears, resulting in ear infections - and we too, unfortunately had a ruptured ear drum. If you had an ear infection chances are the nasal passages were filled too. I would have thought sniffing would be very likely in this case.

It's more likely an effect of her cold/flu.
