Daugher Born Without Enamel on Teeth

Hi ladies,
My daughter was born without enamel on her teeth. Her baby teeth were fine, but her permanent teeth came in very yellow with a rough surface and very crooked. She needs braces and lumineers. The problem is, we have been told enamel is needed to attach the braces. She needs braces before lumineers. Another option is crowns. I don't want every tooth in her head to be crowned. My husband was born with the same lack of enamel and he had to wait until he was in his teens to get all of his teeth crowned. My daughter is 8 and as you can imagine this is very hard on a girl. Has anyone else experienced this lack of enamel problem, if so what were your options?

What can I do next?

I work for a Dentist, he is one of only 2 AACD dentists in louisville. If you would like you could bring her in for a free consult & let him take a look. I'm not sure what options you would have but he would know. Just make sure you research before making a decision. Invisalign might be a option for her. The only problem with that is they have to wear the retainers 23hrs a day. Invisalign will only help if the pt is compliant & with a 8 year old that might be hard for them. My daughter is 13 & has done great with them but 8 is pretty young for invis. Alot of times getting braces on too early does more harm than good.

My nephew has a similar problem. He has an untreatable gum disease called (not sure if spelling is correct) pyrea. A calcium defenciency which makes all of his teeth eventually rot out and become extremely gross looking. Over a period of a few months his mother had his teeth pulled and had implants put in. The teeth actually screwed in his gums. When he gets older he will have one more small surgery that will implant his adult teeth. I dont know if this would help, but i would bring this up to your childs dentist or orthodontist. I do know that insurance covers this. My nephew is just now turning 6. I know this can be done on small children.

I am really not sure about the lack of enamel but about the braces how about the Invisiline? i believe it's like a clear retainer you wear over your teeth to correct them. Just a thought.

have you talked to anyone about invisaline braces. it is a clear plastic that pops in over the teeth and you wear them all the time but you can take them out to blush and stuff. dr. mary kay koen in gallatin does them. they cost a little more but that might work for your daughter. good luck. mom with 2 in braces now and a 25 year old that had them for 5 years. which is the most important to her. Perhaps the teeth are not too badly crooked, as much as the need for nice looking teeth. Crooked can be overlooked, if not horrible, but the white, nice look, adds to her overall beauty. And, children can be cruel about a look. Good luck and God Bless.
