I know this may sound like a strange question, But has anyone had their knees or elbows turn dark after having a baby? Ever since I gave birth to my twins (2 years ago and again with my daughter who is 5 1/2) My knees look dirty! Someone told me to just keep cream them and it will go away, that is what they did and it worked. But no luck here. I dont want to were shorts this summer with my knees looking dirty!

Hi Kara ,

I have never had this happen to me but my girlfriend is going through the same thing as we speak , her mil suggested she scrub her knees daily with a rough wash cloth or a pumia (spelling) stone and put lots of lotion on. Believe it or not is it working ( she does this daily in the shower ) Good luck .

Hi Kara,
I sell MaryKay Cosmetics and I have some products that might help your skin. I am not looking to recruit anyone. I only sell/share the product with family and friends because Mary Kay's products are great and they are reasonably priced. Email or call if interested. Thanks S.

Check with a dermatologist. It's probably just a hormonal thing that will go away. I have psorasis, and it makes my knees look dark. The dermatologist prescribed a cream that helps with this condition. It's worth getting your skin checked out. My understanding is that pregnancy can cause all sorts of strange things to happen to our skin! Good luck. I know how it feels to not look the way you want to. But I'm guessing you're the only one who notices it, so don't let it bother you too much!

I remember it happened to me weeks after giving birth to my little peanut. My neck folds, my armpits got dark. I was like, 'what the hell?' but it all eventually disappeared. I think it's hormonal, like the spots you get on your face (called melasma, or "mask of pregnancy"). I would try what some of the others suggested -- lightening cream or mild steroids. Good luck and congrads on your kids!

I haven't heard of that.... but my SIL has dark spots on her face now. There is a term for it and it's escaping me at the moment. Strivection (although really expensive) can help with it and a dermatologist may have others. The one thing I have noticed about my knees/elbows after having my twinkies... my excema patches like I had when I was a kid are coming back after about 20 years. What the heck?! So maybe those areas are super, super dry and lotion will help?

Go see a dermatologist to be prescribed a lightening cream for those areas. You can try to find something over the counter (active ingredient is hydroquinone) but for good results quickly, get the prescription

I saw this message from you too! I have the dark, dry knees too and it's been over 2 years since I had the twins. My friend who also has this said it's because we crawl around on the floor with them and our knees are really bruised. Have you found any solutions?

Hello Kara:

I have the same problem. My mother-in-law told me to mix a small amount of body lotion and sugar. It may sound strange, but the sugar is a natural exfoliant, and the cream does not allow your knees to get dry. You can apply during shower and rinse right away. You can also try with any body oil. I am trying this, and it is getting lighter. But you have to be careful with sun. Always use a sun screen. Another tip, is to apply chamomile tea. Because it is also known as a natural lighter of skin and hair. I tried it in my face, because I had some dark spots. And it worked.

Hi Kara,

I have the same thing on my knees and I just assumed it was from bathing my son. When I bath him I'm on my knees and since I do it pretty much every day and now for 2 kids since I had one last summer I always thought that's what it's from. I don't have it on my elbows just my knees but if you find what this is caused from please let me know!!

Take care,

N.
