hello mommas,

i am the mom of a lovely and quite active 10 month old son. He has started to crawl and he is much more mobile which has really impacted my daily routine. I am having difficulties cooking and organizing the house. I used to cook when he was napping but we moved to a new house and his room in next to the kitchen so i find myself trying to cook and care for him and the same time and losing my mind a bit. i would really appreciate some ideas on how to establish a good routine so i can organize myself better.

What can I do next?

start putting some sort of white noise (a fan or low radio) in his room while he is sleeping. this will block a little outside noise. at his age he should still be having 2 naps a day. one in the morning and another one after lunch. get as much done as possible during those times. I will probably be the only poster to say this next line. Get a playpen / playyard a big sqaure one and fill it with toys. put it in the corner of the kitchen or somewhere you can see it and get him used to playing in it while your preparing dinner etc. I know lots of people don't like them. And I don't think putting a baby in one for hours and hours on end is a good thing. But being in one for half an hour while you do dishes is not a bad thing. he will be safe and you will have a little sanity left.

My son is not yet 10 months old, but I can only imagine! I see no problem with trying to cook while he is in the next room napping. Try not to make too much noise, maybe limit your cuisine to easier meals for a little bit. My son will sleep through nay noise int the kitchen, but I purposely did not try to keep the house quiet as a mouse when he slept. Hopefully your son will be able to get used to the noise and not have any problems with you keeping your routine the same.

If he hill not sleep through any sounds at all, then why not use a play yard or safety gate. You can bring the play yard out into the best area for you to keep an eye on him and still far enough away from any harms way in the kitchen. He can play in there with his favorite toys and you wont have to worry about him crawling all over the place. Or, you can use a safety gate closing the kitchen off and letting him play in the living room. Just make sure the room is baby proof and let him crawl wild!

Wake up
breakfast cooking while he munches on fruit in hi chair
morning activity -- outside if permissable -- fresh air and energy
lunch - -cook while baby plays with toy and snacks in chair or on mat
nap
afternoon activity -- errands or park if did not make it to park in morning
dinner -- baby can play on mat or in hi chair.

I will add something not pc -- I used a nice dvd at this age (Baby signing time or leap frog) -- up to 40 mins a day -- in order to allow me to get some things done. You will receive criticism, but I feel motherhood is not about perfection, but also enjoying the ride and not being perfect.

Good Luck. J.

My MIL puts our 9 month old cruiser in a highchair and slowly feeds him finger foods while she does the cooking. He loves the interraction, she knows he is safe and near.

Another alternative, is to try your hand at so called "once a month cooking." google it online. Basically it involves prepping food so its nearly ready, then storing it in the freezer, so dinner is never much effort.

I haven't tried it, but it sounds really do-able.
