Cultural/Different Foods

We had a potluck at work today, and got on the subject of different foods that we eat (for example, I'm Jewish, but don't keep Kosher, so a coworker laughed when I ate ham!). Some other traditionally Jewish foods sound weird to people, but I love them (like gefilte fish). Is there anything that you eat that is a little different from either your religion or country of origin? I used to be vegetarian, but now I'm like - what the heck - I'll try (almost) anything! I eat healthy and work out, so I figure sometimes something new and different is a good thing. Plus my daughter is a brave eater as well!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

This is a lot of fun - I really appreciate everyone's time (and forgive me if I ask for recipes!). 1) what exactly is Haggis? I've heard a lot about it lately 2)8kidsdads - I would pass on sheep eyes as well! But I love escargot. One day I might try the prarie oysters... 3) Cockles actually sounds really good!
I love sushi and made Indian food the other day. Another weird food that my mom made growing up was called Wide Noodles and Cottage Cheese - pretty much how it sounds - egg noodles mixed with cottage cheese and sour cream. Now that we have low fat versions of the ingredients, maybe I should revisit it.
For me, the spicier the better :)

Bean cakes! You can usually find it in an oriental market. I grew up on them and I crave them to this day. It is like hummus only cold and sweet in an egg roll wrapper.

I eat white rice w/everything. Bfast, lunch and dinner if I can. I eat it w/my eggs, hot dogs, meat, soups and even some fruit.

I like Thai, Italian and Chinese food.
Vietnamese beef noodle soup is wonderful.
I make a very good coconut curry chicken casserole (onions, chicken, sweet potatoes, mild curry and coconut milk).
I grew up with smoked kielbasa and farmer cheese pierogies (from the Broadway Market in Buffalo, NY - it's gone now).
Love mild chicken wings, oyster stew and I'm the only one in the house that likes liver and onions.
I also like sushi, clams/oysters on the half shell, all kinds of seafood, Bouillabaisse, paella, goat milk fudge and jambalaya.

I wasn't very adventurous with food until I got to college. My home town just had a few standard fast food restaurants until after I moved away. My husband still likes to joke because when we went back, the chinese restaurant had "grit" on the menu.
My friends in college introduced me to spam musubi, furikake seasoning, salmon with sesame oil, hummus, and felafel. There was a religious group that invited everyone to vegetarian dinners once a month. Free food was a great incentive to get college students to try new things.
My son is actually more adventurous than I am, although he doesn't like spicy or saucy foods. He has gotten us to try many things we wouldn't normally, such as alligator jerky, liverwurst, salami, fried chicken livers, chicken bacon, spicy sprouts, mussels, amaranth, millet bread, starfruit, quince, and kumquats.

LMAO!! I will cook any type of cuisine as long as I'm fairly confident my family will try it. Recently I've been on a Thai & Indian kick so on a fairly regular basis we're trying different types of curries or marinades, I even made naan from scratch that came out magnificently. Actually, it was after that meal in particular that my 10 year old daughter told me how happy she is that we "don't eat American food every night." I can't even begin to tell you how happy that made me not only that she likes what I'm making for her, but that she appreciates the diversity I try to bring to all of our palates!

I'm a fairly adventurous eater.

HOWEVER, I have some friends that are muslim and they have a holiday where they buy sheeps' heads and the guest of honor gets to eat the sheeps eyes. Thanks, but no thanks. I have some friends that loved rooster fries and prarie oysters. Again, Thanks, but no thanks. The same goes for escargot. I've offered the people that "love" escargot to come to my garden and they can have all the fresh escargot they want, but no takers.

I will eat rabbit, racoon, deer, bear, moose, buffalo, but draw the line at possum and possum on the half shell (armadillo). I've eaten trout on a stick. (We were on a scout camp out and the scouts caught trout.)

I like Kenyan chicken, Jamaican jerk fish chicken and lobster British fish and chips, Austrailian camel, ostrich and emu, German bratwurst, Belgian strawberry pie, Sweedish smoked fish and Dutch chocolate. Italian goat was fantastic as was their pizza and garlic spaghetti.

Thanks for the question. Good luck to you and yours.

I joke that I grew up on on "white people food" but once I left the nest I started eating many more types of food. I love Thai and Indian food and while not entirely game to traditional Chinese dim sum (friends will order things like chicken feet), I do give many dishes a try. When I travel, I don't eat in chain restaurants. Give me a little cafe somewhere or a mom and pop diner. That's what I prefer.

I love sushi! And Tai food....We are pretty much open to trying out different food's, although I don't eat pork because of religious reasons. I just started making Bombay style Biryani and I make it pretty good! My friend that is Indian actually says that I make it better then her lol! My kid's are pretty open to trying out new foods too so that was never really a problem. My friends are always nagging me to make them stuffed grapeleaves and taboleh, they love it!

Nothing i eat is normal for Texas. Im a vegetarian and i try to buy only healthy ingredients as well. The sight of white bread and pasta in my house is rare indeed and youll see what you think is meat when i have a dinner party (its not). I love Asian and Indian vegetarian food. With Asian food i cant get enough of miso, seaweed, tofu and veg sushi rolls with wasabi. Indian food is my absolute favorite!, i love dahl, mattaar paneer, burfi, samosas....theres this thing called a 'dosa' its like a thin pancake that comes with dipping sauces. yum....paneer cheese is so fresh and i love it in a mint sauce. Most of the stuff that hindus and hare krishnas offer to god doesnt have meat and i feel very secure in eating it. Theres a litle vegan buffet in my city that i go to that has a chinese family that owns it, the food is so clean and fresh......it kicks american foods butt!

I will not "try anything"....however i will "try anything vegetarian"...while i like to broaden my tastes to include pleasures from around the world i have to know its clean.

We're pretty generic as far as our roots. Well, except for good German saurbraten! But we travel a lot and eat local where we are. We spent 10 days in Japan about 5 years ago and with the exception of one dinner at a Hard Rock and 1 dinner at a TGIFriday's, we ate traditional. Our daughter was happy there was rice with every meal, but our son was pretty adventurous!
I also love Middle Eastern food, Greek and true Italian food. And agree with MechanicMama, REAL Mexican!
Bottom line, I just love food!
