Cub Scouts - Winter Springs,FL

My son's pack is fantastic. They ALWAYS include siblings in activities. My 4 year old goes to EVERY event. The campouts are for the entire family. Our cubmaster has a 6 month old who goes to meetings and events with the family. Quality time as a family is HUGE and it is something they encourage. I strongly encourage you to give it a shot. Also, I have a friend who is in a pack in Volusia County, and she has a 1 year old and 4 year old daughter who go to everything. She took her baby as a newborn and had a fantastic time. It was a great way for her to bond with her son as well as her younger daughters. There are lots of single moms, moms who have spouses with demanding jobs, etc. I think it is a fantastic organization. It is definitely not an exclusive father-son thing. So if your hubby works odd hours, its no big deal. My husband travels a lot, and we still love it. I wouldn't change a thing.

Hi I am a Cubmaster/Den Leader for Pack 365 in Palm Bay. First question is your son in 1st grade? To join it is 10.00. The uniform depending on the pack can run you 40.00-60.00. The difference is some packs do not require you to purchase the shorts/pants of the uniform just wear regular twill navy shorts/pants. Most of the time you do not need to purchase all of it at one time. Maybe the shirt and patches and then other items another time. The book is very important as soon as possible which is 6.00. Some packs can help you by asking if they have any scouts that have changed ranks and would like to donate. Shirts are usually worn a few years depending on how the boy grows. Most Packs try and do fundraisers through out the year so the cost of suppiles, badges and misc stuff is purchase through that. Some dens collect dues and the money from those are used for supplies to be used by the boys for crafts and misc things.

Now for the questions about about your husband having odd hours. For your son's age you will have to be at the meeting. Cubscouts is all about the FAMILY. A lot of parents bring the whole family. After the first year you will have to leave your son just in the meeting but on outings the whole family is invited to go.It is encouraged. We meet at a church and some parents stay and talk with other parents or some go and run errands.

I am about the biggest advocate you can find for Cub Scouting!!! My husband is an Eagle Scout (the highest you can go in scouting) so we knew we wanted to give scouting a shot for my son... and the entire family loves it!!!! It's not the way it used to be where there is a den mother and everyone drops off their kids-- Cub Scouting is all about FAMILY-- you are actually not allowed to drop off your child when they are a young scout-- you HAVE to stay at the meetings and outings(or a trusted adult has to stay in your place). I have a daughter too and we dropped out of Girl Scouts (for various reasons) and she is fine with it because she actually gets a lot out of attending the Cub Scout meetings and events with her brother and the other boys all bring their siblings, too. I am the den leader and this is my 4th year, so feel free to ask me any questions. Cub Scouts should be available to EVERY boy who is interested, so they try to keep costs at a minimum. Your cubmaster will assist you in finding resources to help pay for anything that is a hardship, like our pack has a uniform exchange. But the only costs are a small fee (I think like $25) for registration, minimal pack dues (like $25 a year) and the uniform. You realy only need the shirt and then the rest of the uniform is optional and you can buy bits and pieces as he stays in scouting over the years. GO FOR IT!!!

My family is very active in scouts. When my son was in cub scouts, there were always younger siblings at the meetings, so do not feel bad about taking them along.

As far as the cost goes, what area of town do you live in? You need to contact Aaron harding at the Boy scouts council office. He is in charge of what they call the Cherokee District. This group is all art of the scoutreach program. The kids pay a registration fee of ten dollars, but they earn everything else they need just by attending meeting. Two meetings, they get there handbook, six meetings, they get their uniform shirt. and so on. I know they have a scoutreach troup at Rosemonet elemenary and several others in the area. It would be well worth it to contact them.
