I am having my 3rd csection in 8 days. My youngest daughter is almost 5 so its been awhile! I remember being hungry in the middle of the night and of course not being able to eat cause the cafe was closed! I wanted to pack snacks in my bag but cant remember what kind of diet I was allowed to eat! The only thing I remember being allowed to eat was mashed potatoes and gravy! So anyone had a recent csection and can tell me what they were able to eat! Thanks so much!

edit: when I had my girls and I asked for a snack they brought me jello, which I hate. I was also told I couldnt eat "real food" until I had a bm.

What can I do next?

After my first daughter was born c-section 7 years ago I don't remember any restrictions on food. Just before the csection you couldn't eat.

I was able to eat real food as soon as the nausea went away and I passed gas. So, bring whatever you'd like to eat!

I had a c-section almost a year ago. You won't be able to eat anything for at least 12 hours before surgery. After that, it's a clear liquid diet until the catheter comes out, which is about 12 hours. After that 12 hours, they may limit you to soft foods only depending on how your bowel sounds. I was on soft foods for one meal and it was breakfast, so I could eat eggs. Not too big of a deal. After that, you can eat as normal.
My hospital had room service. They would bring you whatever you wanted whenever you wanted it. They also had a snack room that had pop and light snacks in it. Things have really changed at a lot of hospitals in just a few short years. You might want to schedule a tour with your hospital before your scheduled c-section date.

are you having your lo at RO Beaumont or Troy Beaumont? Their new womens birthing center is GREAT!!!! just ask for whatever you want the staff is great. I had my c-section almost 11 months ago and I was not restricted on what i could eat. Every morning my hubby brought me breakfast he was there at 6am well before they served bfast. we would have luch and dinner together and the hospital always had fresh backed goods every night. and my nurse would make sure I had fruit and carbs for the long nights. I do remember that I had really bad gas pains in my neck so they gave me stool softeners everyday and gas pills to help releive the pressure. I did not take any pain meds except for extra strengh tylenol and Ibprophine. I did not want the "drugs" in my milk. The theory is you cant poop if you dont eat. also walk alot that gets things moving. as for snacks have fruit, have hubby bring you bagles in the am and be sure to drink lots of water. gl and congrats

I had a c-section in August & I didn't have any limitations on what I was allowed to eat. They had a meal prepared for me shortly after I was in my room because when you have a sheduled c-section you are not allowed to eat or drink anything 8-10 hrs beforehand or something like that. Also, I remember when I was picking my meals that I would purposely pick a little extra so I would have something in my room to eat if I got hungry later. I would check with the hospital though as they are all probably a little different. If there are no limitations just pack what you want and also make sure they give you food! I'm sure that with a scheduled c-section it is taking place earlier in the day so you should probably be there during meal time anyway. Good luck!!

P.S. Just saw your edit and no way was I wating to eat real food til I had a bm ... took me a week!! Your body gets all screwed up with abdominal surgery. I was told that as long as it didn't take more than a week for that then you were fine ... but not a chance I was waiting that long to eat!! Agian, maybe just check with your hospital to see what their rules on it are.

I could have "real food" once I passed gas. For me, it happened to be in the middle of the night & I was starving! My nurse brought me a cup of chicken noodle soup, and they brought me a regular breakfast that morning even though I didn't have a BM until that afternoon. But before the gas, the "meals" they brought me consisted of jello, chicken broth, sherbet, all liquidy stuff.

Hi S. ~
Where I work, a c-section patient gets a clear liquid diet (which can include coffee & tea, so why not cola? LOL) for the first day. A couple of our doctors make patients wait until they pass gas before advancing their diets, but most advance it the next morning. We normally have a pretty good supply of popsicles, italian ice, juice, jello, apple sauce & broth on our floor to give patients during the middle of the night.
Hope that helps & good luck!

You can't ask the nurses for a snack? After each of my kids, no matter what timeit was, day or night, the nurses would bring me a turkey sandwich or some fruit!

I just had my second via c-section. My experience was that for a short time post surgery you could only have clear liquids, then once you are cleared you could have solids. I delivered at 10:30 pm and was able to have a regular breakfast at 7 the following morning. If you are thinking of that first stretch, I think that you'll be limited to broth, tea, water, jello, popsicles etc. but after that try apples and other whole friut, crackers, nuts, granola bars. Of course I would check with your doc for specifics on if your hospital has diet restrictions he/she could tell you best. Wishing you the best for a safe delivery and healthy new little one! :-)

If I remember right, the first day was just liquid stuff until they removed the catheter. After that it was anything. I also agree with Rachel - are you not able to ask the nurses for something? Ours always had juice, pop, and at least crackers available to us whenever we needed them - we just had to ask.

You will be on liquids for a while...do what they say...I ate and drank too soon and threw up. Then I ate grilled cheeses after the first day and fries. Whatever I wanted really. The pain meds make you really constipated so anything with fiber would really help you. As for snacks, I don't remember being hungry, the pain meds really knocked me out and like I said, after the first day, I ate 3 really good big meals a day so there is no reason you shouldn't be able to as well.

I don't think there are any limits. Pretty sure you can eat anything you want, as long as everything is normal...

I had no diet restrictions at all... they probably don't want you to get gassy or constipated b/c those first few BMs hurt to strain against, but I can't imagine there are any restrictions at all!

I think they will have you do a light or liquid diet that first meal, but after thaty you should be fine. Oh, I don't know that its a BM as much as passing gas that they want. They want to know its all moving along. I ate well before my first BM.

I had my son 17 months ago at Beaumont Troy via c-section. I don't remember any diet restrictions -- my husband brought me a full meal from home within 12 hours and I'm sure I had eaten hospital food before that... regular stuff.

Good luck and congrats!
