My 16 month old daughter will not drink water. I have tried everything but she just won't drink it. Is crystal light safe for someone her age to drink if watered down so that I can get her to drink water?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, we decided against the crystal light but since her pediatrician wants her to drink at least 1 cup of water a day we tried the tea bags in the water (she hated that), I tried cold water instead of just tap water but that did not do well either, so I tried the flavored waters without carbonation from Walmart and that was the best and she loved them. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and input.

I would recommend maybe just a splash of juice in her water instead. I know there are conflicting opinions about the safety of artificial sweeteners, but personally they all give me a stomachache and headache, so I tend to believe they can't be as perfectly harmless as some would claim. Hope this helps!

It contains aspartame which has been linked to brain cancer. I wouldn't go there. I'd dilute juice and just keep diluting it more and more or go to sprouts and get something there.

I wouldn't be to concern about the water thing yet, but children pick up habits from you any way. My 2 used to drink tons of soda because that was moms choice of drink. I know, I know not very healthy! I can honestly say that within the last year, we have totally changed as a family for the better. We all drink water and eat a healthy diet. Again, your child will not have a problem drinking water if they see you and thats all there is. Always keep small kid size water bottles in a bag or in the car.
I don't know if this is healthy for your 16month old, but you can dilute the vitamin waters, or maybe gatorade??

Good Luck

Hi - 16 months is still pretty early for water. My pediatrician recommends my boys continue drinking mostly whole milk until they are 5 (their little brains need lots of natural fats to continue developing at the speed they need to), and to limit how much water and juice they drink, because too much water can cause diarrhea in infants, and juice dumps too much sugar into their little systems.

If it's just a little water here or there to keep your toddler hydrated, try soaking a fruit tea bag in cool water to add a little flavor, without using sweeteners or chemicals (orange, raspberry, peach and other fruit teas are usually all-natural and easy to find at any grocery store).

Crystal light is full of aspartame and artificial colors. I would avoid it. drinking lots of water is not necessary at her age and is not worth the potential effects of the chemicals in such a little body. she can get water mixed with fruit juice you could experiment with ratios and other fluids such as milk and yobaby smoothies and every time she eats fresh fruit it is 70% water. there are some natural lemon packets to flavor water called real lemon, I believe but my kids were not crazy about them. I like them though! A. I have some weight loss tips on my website www.eatingrightbyamy.com

Please keep your little one away from the chemical, toxic sweeteners in Crystal light.
My baby girl is 21 mo & her favorite drink is Organic rice milk (cheaper at Trader Joes) w/ a few splashes of orange juice.
The 1st ingredient is water, so I dont worry about her water intake if she doesnt get much that day. Its also loaded w/ calcium, B vitamins & heart healthy fat.
Try it! Its delicious & the bit of oj makes it awesome.
We actually drink that as well as eat yogurt & cheese & dont do cows milk AT ALL.
Good luck!

I say no to anything that contains articifical ingredients. Try diluting organic juice in her water. I bought my todler an aluminum water bottle that keeps the water cold for up to 12 hours. I fill it up with water once or twice a day and keep it handy. He drinks out of it all the time. When he wants juice I dilute it. Check out Whole Foods or Trader Joes...they have organic flavored water/juice that are very low in sugar and do not contain any artificial ingedients.

Oh, please consider something else besides giving your little one anything that has toxic sweeteners in it. Really, read up on them before you consider using them. They are really, really bad. Instead you can dilute 100% juice (apple, white grape, etc.) with water. I had to do that with my little boy who also refused to drink water and it worked great. Even though I would put probably only 20% juice & 80% water, it really helped. I know many would say not to do this because you'll get them addicted to sweet juices too early, but that did not happen with us. The key was just a tiny bit of juice. Good luck.

I was kind of interested in this situation. I'm wondering if you got rid of all other drinks and she had no choices would she drink water? Do you give her other drinks with sugar etc if she boycotts the water? I would add sprigs of mint, lemon or lime instead of giving her something with a bunch of sugar in it. Kids don't need juice or soda, we only have water at our house, when we go out to eat the kids can have a soda without caffeine for a treat.

There is conflicting information out there about whether or not artificial sweeteners are safe. We adults drink it anyway because staying slim is worth the risk. ;-) But it is a risk, though, so I would think long and hard before putting something like that in your child.

I agree that 16 months seems a little young to be worried about water intake. Have you talked with your Pediatrician about this? Is your daughter showing signs of dehydration? If not, I would continue to offer water/milk and trust that she will drink when she's thirsty. Stay away from juices, though, because once she gets a taste for the sweetness, she'll NEVER want to drink plain water.

Try blending organic fruit in a blender to flavor the water. Apples are in season now....Pulverize all but the stem. You can also introduce vegetables in this manner...By adding cilantro you can help prevent the potentially harmful effects of vaccines...and non-organic foods, soaps and cleaning products.
Many delishious meals can be consumed by a puree with a blender. NOT a juicer... To sweeten, add unrefined honey or blue agave syrup.. Cinnamon is also a good for flavoring and very healthy. Refer to the book Cure Any Disease by Jeff Primack for or his Smoothie Formulas....
Time to eat healthy...Crystal Lite is toxic garbage, for adults as well as children. Make sure the water you use is purified, NOT from the tap.

I would stay away from such an artificial product. Xylitol as a sweetener would be safer, and protect your daughter's teeth. You could mix up your own beverage with it. (I use herbal and green tea with my daughter..often unsweetened.)
Good luck. Is your water filtered? Does temp make a difference? Is it served in plastic?...that leaves an unpleasant taste often. Try ceramic or stainless steel cup. We use stainless cups...I forget where I found them. Sorry. Good luck!

Hi there.
I think you are asking this due to the NutraSweet/Splenda ect. sweeteners & their effects? I dilute it or the store brand a lot anyway..to me it is like almost jello water. When I asked my doc if I drinking more Crystal Light than plain water to get my "daily water intake goal" - am I ok.
He said "Well..when you go to the car wash to wash your car..you do not wash it with iced T or Crystal Light, right? Water would be best but better than other alternate choices." lol go figure =)
But there are some flavored waters (sugar free, no to few calories)that can fool her/you too.
At Wal-Mart..and their store brand they have sparkling flavored waters in a million flavors. They really taste like something other than water. Like Sprite but in a bunch of flavors. Bottles are like 50cent each.
There is also Fruit2O & a few others that are flavored waters.

Hope that helps.=)

I would say no due to all of the artifical sweetners etc. in them. I'm not sure what's in Kool-Aid but that may be an option. I would personally try True Lemon, True Lime or True Orange. They are all natural crystalized citrus and add a nice flavor to the water. http://www.truelemon.com/ I've been able to find the lemon and lime at Safeway but didn't have luck finding the orange so I ordered it from their website. You can go on there and get some free samples to try.
