My son 4 months old is formula fed and it is given whne you take the bottle away he will cry. My husband and I are having a problem with him crying when he has finished his bottle. He gets 6 to 7 oz a feeding but still cries for more. If he gets 7 he spits up so I know if I give him more that is what he will do. He has a mild case of reflux so we were even told to do less and more feedings a day. I hav enot started rice cereal yet b/c we are switching peditrician's and would like to see who we end up with along with what they suggest. We are on enfamil AR 9babies who spit up) Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I agree with Staci C and Melody B...my son did the same thing, but he just liked to be soothed by the sucking (especially if he is teething). Try swapping the bottle with something that he can suck or chew on.

It might be he is crying because he still wants to suck, not necessarily want to eat more. So I would offer him a pacifier after he has had an opportunity to burp, and see if this helps any. He should be satisfied after 6 ounces so I wouldn't feed him any more; he will get overfed and then spitup like you said. He might be crying because he has a burp, too. Good luck!

My 4 month old does the same thing. He whines a little after feeding no matter how much he eats. I generally will try and burp him, walk around the house, or immediately switch out the bottle with a pacifier. It usually works and he stops crying after a minute or so.

My daughter was diagnosed with reflux at around 4 weeks old.. She would scream uncontrollably after feedings. We switched to Enfamil Gentlease and added 1tsp of rice per oz in her bottle and she stopped. (Of course she also takes Prevacid) but there was a noticeable difference in the formula alone. I would definitely try adding rice to the bottle, if it is his reflux the rice will weigh the formula down so it won't come up as much. We also left my daughter upright for at least 30 minutes after every feeding.

AR babies NEED to suck it helps releive the pain. Get him on some form of medication if not already it does serious damage to the stomache and esophogus if untreated. It is stomache acid that's comming up OUCH! If you are going to do the rice thing use the AR, we use gentlease and breast it's doing well for ours along with axid. See about using AR and Gentlease back and fouth, when you just add rice cereal to a bottle it messes up the formula and it's not right, plus cereal goes in a bowl not a bottle. Most pedi reccomend to NOT thicken an AR baby's food b/c if they do still spit it up esp. while sleeping it could choke them more easily than regular stuff. We have also found that since we stopped burping our son he spits up less MUCH less, and he burps by himself if needed. Yes AR can be very diicult to live with, I have done a ton o research on this subject, any questions you need answered email is ____@____.com good luck. I too am a 1st timer with the same age.

I had the same problem with my daughter at this age and my pediatrician said to put some cereal in her milk. Just a little, enough tho make the formula thicker, but not chunky-he needs to be able to still drink it from a bottle-or you can choose to mix it and spoon feed, but the bottle is easier. Of course if you don't buy a feeding bottle you'll have to make the hole in the regular bottle a little bigger. Some people think this will "fatten" up your baby, but my little girl is 2 now and is perfect height/weight-she's in the 50th percentile!! So, little man just has an appitite!! I wouldn't do it in every bottle, we did it in her morning feeding-one middle day feeding and the feeding before bed-it also made her sleep a lot better. It's not too early to try some babyfood either. I would reccommend starting out on vegetables instead of fruit. Hope my advise has helped!!Good luck and congrats...they grow up so fast!!

At four months I started feeding my son rice cereal by a spoon and he loved it. Just b/c he spits up doesn't mean he is full. He will tell you when he is full by biting down on the nipple or turning his head. My son is 5 1/2 months and takes two meals by spoon and 8 ounce bottles and still spits up. His Pediatric Gastrointeraligest said that spitting up is normal until about a year.

Good Luck.

MY SECOND DAUGHTER HAD A LITTLE REFLUX PROBLEM AS WELL AND SHE STARTED OFF WITH BREAST MILK WHICH WAS GREAT BUT SINCE SHE WAS 5WKS PREMIE SHE WOULD NOT BREAST FEED. SINCE I HAD A ONE YR OLD TO ALSO TAKE CARE OF PUMPING GOT LESS SO WENT TO FORMULA. SIMILAC WAS THE WORST, ENFAMIL WAS BETTER BUT THE NESTLE GOOD START WAS WONDERFUL FOR HER! SHE STARTED SPITTING UP LESS AND DIDN'T HAVE THE HORRIBLE GAS PAINS AS MUCH. YOU COULD TRY THAT AND MAYBE FEED HIM 5OZ THEN TAKE A 10 MIN BREAK LET HIM BURP THEN FEED HIM SOME MORE AND SEE IF HE'S SATISFIED. I KNOW HOW FRUSTRATING THIS CAN BE YOU FEEL SO HELPLESS-YOUR BABY IS SCREAMING AND NOTHING YOU DO CONSOLES THEM. I TELL YOU WHAT WITH MY DAUGHTER EVERY MONTH SEEMED TO GET BETTER AND BETTER. AFTER ABOUT THE 4 MO MARK SHE STARTED TO REALLY IMPROVE SO MAYBE THAT WILL GIVE YOU A LITTLE HOPE!!! GOD BLESS!!!

WOW! I thought I was reading out my youngest. My son was diagnosed w/acid reflux at 7 wks. It was very projectile very time I turned around, it was very hard and stressful being a single mother(thank god for family/friends)
For my son nothing really helped except elevating him for about an hr after each feeding and I would never would give him more than 6 oz at a time, he also had colic as well.
I tried gentle ease which really didn't work as well as enfamil AR which didn't help at all.
He was put on reglan and we tried Enfamil soy which did the trick and he was on soy formula/milk until he was about 13/14 months.

It was a life saver putting him on soy. Is your son a paci baby? Mine was and it helped a lot after I would feed him if he fussed, I would give him his paci and that would help soothe him.

Good Luck and God Bless. This too shall pass.
Please don't hesitate to PM me or email me ____@____.com if you need to talk. I know how hard and stressful it can be.

My child had reflux as well, but I agree with Melody that the crying might just be that he was enjoying the sucking. Once the bottle is suddenly gone, he does not know how to soothe himself and just wants that nipple back in his mouth. The book "The Happiest Baby on the Block" tells us that babies have the need to suck for the first several months of life. If he uses a pacifier, you might try that. Or try distracting him with a book or toy after feedings. The book I mentioned above really helped me with simple techniques on soothing babies.
I know this is stressful and you feel like you don't know what to do. But just try to remember that, whatever the problem, it will eventually pass.
