Cruise Control

Maybe more of vent, hubby just drove the whole 30 min drive home down starting on a one lane highway but then heading into town with increasingly more stop lights and crossroads and traffic, with the cruise on. I kept grabbing the dash board and using my passanger side brake. It wasn't worth the fight tonight but, What the heck was he thinking? do most of you drive around an urban area with your cruise on???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The passanger brake was a joke.

He would come up on a car, and pass, or if he had to stop, he would re-engage the cruise as soon as possible. He probably had it set higher than the speed limit as well., Although even if the other traffic was slower he should have responded to the increase in traffic and the slower speed and not kept using the cruise which causes the car to surge ahead each time he puts it back on. I'm annoyed, because to me cruise is for NON-stop driving like interstates. apparently though the issue is more to do with the speed he was driiving at, which was just enough over the limit that i probably wouldn't have noticed if he had just naturally increased and decreased the speed instead of having the cruise stop and start continually.

You have a passenger side brake?

I used to have a car with cruise control.... I would use it "in town" on one of those limited access roads - there were stop lights but you still went like 35 for a mile or two between lights.

I don't have cruise control on my car. But, as long as he was within the speed limit and followed laws why were you concerned with if he was driving with cruise control on?

I never use cruise control. I prefer to be fully in control of the car.

I thought that when you step on the brake it disengages cruise control.

No, I rarely use cruise control. Usually there is enough traffic that it is more of a pain than a convenience!
In fact, the only reason I got it is because it is a standard feature of the car I drive!

Probably someone told him that using the cruise control saves gas/money so he using it in traffic to save gas.

Cruise control works on long distance driving on generally level freeways. If you have uneven freeway that is uneven enough to cause the cruise control to turn on and off, you are NOT saving gas. The same for city traffic. You save money when the engine RPMs stay the same. By the cruise control speeding and slowing the engine, its the same as putting your foot on and off the accellerator. You're wasting gas.

I was a factory service rep for GM. I was ASE certified. I have driven 4 cylinder GM pickups and gotten 40+ mpg on the freeway while explaining to customers what it takes to get good fuel economy.

Good luck to you and yours.

I usually only use it on open highways and freeways. I love it but only if I know I will be going a certian speed for more then a few minutes.

I am confused, there is no way you can drive cross town with the cruise control engaged unless you luck into all green lights and no one turning in your path. Very unlikely.

My daughter always drives with her cruise control on, it keeps her from zoning out and speeding.

So I guess I am confused as to what you are getting at with this post.
