Hello! My 2 month old was diagnosed with Croup 3 days ago. The Dr. prescribed Prednisone to be taken for 3-5 days. It is the third day and the symptoms are worse. To top it off, he woke up this morning with green gook in his eyes and a snotty nose. He had just finished his dose of antibiotics the same day he was diagnosed with the croup. (He had an ear infection). Shouldn't the medicine make him better?
addional: we have a 4:00 appointment. I am going to have them check for another ear infection today. A little concerned it could be whooping cough, even though he was vaccinnated last week. But, he was vaccinnated the same day he was diagnosed with the ear infection. Not sure if being sick made sickness worse, even though the dr. said it wouldn't hurt him. I was highly concerned with getting vaccines while sick!!
My doctor told me just the other day that kids should not get vaccinated when they are sick because it could make the symptoms worse.
NEVER NEVER NEVER vaccinate while sick! NO MATTER WHAT YOUR DOCTOR SAYS! Tylenol depletes the glutathione in the body and you want that in your body to help you detox, so giving tylenol is not advised either. Another HUGE detail doctors forget to tell you. Have you been using a humidifier? Also, What helped croup go away for us... was to turn the shower on as hot as you can get it. You and baby go sit on the bathroom floor or counter with a book or a toy. Shut the bathroom door so that the steam will stay in there. Let baby breathe in that humid air for about 10 minutes. Then, (it sounds crazy, I know) but then, wrap baby up and go outside into the cool night air and let her breathe that in. Dont stay out there that long... just enough to get the cool air.
Doing this and having the humidifier, will help so much! We always did Decadron (which is just another named steroid) and Xopenex if we sound like we need it... AND the humid air. Works like a charm every time. We usually do a low dose of steriods for 5 days though. 3 days doesnt get it done. Hope this helps!
I'd take him back for a follow up visit... my son needed 3 serious rounds of antibiotics to get rid of his ear infection. The prednisone always worked for my daughters croup, and she had it constantly for almost 2 years. Is he still coughing croupy??
Does he still have the croupy cough? The prednisone cleared up the croup for my ds immediately in the ER. If he is still croupy after 3 days I definately think another opinion is a good idea. it is very possible he has multiple things going, poor baby. Sure hope he gets better soon!
Dont wait croup is dangerous. My boys get it a lot in the change of seasons. My son once turned blue from his airway closing. The only thing that works for my boys is Decodron it is a very strong steriod but it really is the only thing that will take it away... Hope he gets better fast.
Vaccinated children can still get whooping cough. How often this happens varies depending on who you ask. It is also possible to get a disease FROM a vaccine, but the prevalence of this again varies depending on who you're talking to. My only personal experience with this is that my nieces, who were all fully vaccinated, got croup several times and the doctor referred to croup and whooping cough interchangeably. And I don't have time to verify this information but, as far as vaccinating while a child is sick, I'm pretty sure there are mainstream guidelines that advise against doing so; You may want to look into that for next time.
Doctors are wonderful and necessary but it's important to recognize their limitations. They are trained in Western medicine and are highly influenced on every level of their primary and continuing education by the pharmaceutical industry. They are inherently trusting of drugs because this is the primary mode of treatment they are trained in. Vaccines are drugs and have risks that many doctors may tend to minimize the risks of, simply because their medical training leads them to prefer those methods of treatment and be more skeptical instead, of more natural or alternative options.
In the end you've got to evaluate the situation yourself about how and when and even if you vaccinate, keeping in mind that your doctor has inherent biases that will color his or her perspective.

Went through this a little over a month ago. ER told us both girls had croup and gave them steroids. worse next day and the next. Begged pediatrition to fit us in.
They both had type A influenza (flu) and strep and one of them had a double ear infection.
I think it's worth a second opinion with tests run to verify!
