You can take her to the ped. There can be grounds to be in the hospital on rare occasions. I'd expect 3 nights of barking. Going out side does help or steaming up the bathroom.
Four kids and never experienced croup. My 9 month old granddaughter is so sick. Questions, now long did fever last, how many night was the seal like cough go on, and what was most helpful to you. Thanks.
She has been to the pediatrician already. I told her about the steam and cold air outside. Just wondering if there are any other things that anyone learned along the way. Her temp has not gone below 100.7. Just feel so bad for her. The when little ones are sick.
Thanks everyone for your help. Poor baby is so miserable. 104 temp. Hoping for a better day tomorrow.

my grandmother gave me hot toddies.
Hot tea to sooth the throat
honey for the cough (i don't think you can give honey to someone under 1
lemon for taste
whiskey to stop the cough
Worked.
And yes, whiskey is proven as a cough suppressant - whether you are ready to use that is your call
My son gets Croup 3-4 times a year, he is 6. He is typically out for a week, no school, no activities, nothing but home and rest. The real bark is anywhere from 3-6 days, and always gets worse at night. The doc typically gives a steroid for strider (I think it's called) when the wheezy sound comes during breathing.
Typically if strider has not come in the first 24 it does not come for us, and other than cool mist humidifier and lots of rest we have found no means of easing his symptoms.
I babysat O. night for a little O. that woke up barking.
I was terrified, as mine never had it.
I remembered reading that a temperature change would help.
Since it was winter, I wrapped him in a blanket & walked him outside.
It helped.
Also, you can run the hot shower to make steam.
I know this particular child was given meds, so call the pediatrician as well for advice!
All 3 of my girls have suffored from croup. Each getting an ambulance ride from the severity. 1 child did better in the hot steamy bathroom. 1 does better with cool night air. (Mr. Moon was our buddy! and we would have to go outside to tell him about our day and sing him songs when it was bad!) and the 3rd we would take out to talk to Mr. Moon and then go warm up in the steamy bathroom. It usually lasts a few nights. My kids always needed to go on prednisolone to get through it because they would get so severe they couldn't breath.
If she gets croup often or several times in a year you may want to consider going to see an asthma specialist. My middle and youngest child kept getting it and we found it is actually asthma. It isso hard on the child and torture for the parents (or grandparents too)
Also having a humidifier in the childs room seems to help some. We have a cool mist one for safety and it puts enough moisture in the air to be helpful but not to make things wet.
I hope your little one gets through this quickly.
I used to turn the shower on hot, close the door and sit with my son to help with the "barking." Alternating Tylenol and ibuprofen helps with bring fevers down. 3 nights (when it's the worst) for the barking. Keep her hydrated to help her regulate the fever, too.
I remember having croup.
I must have been about 4 yrs old.
I had a cold for a day or so, the cough started up, and then in the middle of the night I went to my Mom gasping for breath - I couldn't get any air in - my throat had closed up.
She sat me on a stool in front of the stove and got a pot of water boiling and that helped my throat open up again.
Steam helps - a bathroom with the door closed and a hot shower running will work.
Sometimes cool moist night air will work too.
In the process of bundling up and going to the doctors office, sometimes by the time you get there the symptoms ease off a bit.
I remember having to take a thick yucky yellowish medicine that tasted a bit like licorice for a week or so.
My daughter had croup this winter. She ended up having nebulizer treatments several times a day. It worked wonderfully. Her symptoms lasted about a week or so.
Cortisone shot was amazing for my 3 yr old but probably not appropriate for a baby.
Croup for DD and SD and SS was fairly mild, as they go. No rushes to the ER. Turned on the shower for steam and/or walked them outside in the chilly air for a bit for a few nights. Just tried to keep them comfortable. It's like laryngitis for little kids. Most of them are OK after a few days.
