Hey guys I was wondering if getting a crock pot is a good idea? Dinner time has become so monotonous and wanted to try new things. I know you just throw food in there and leave it for the day and was wondering how the food comes good and if there are lots of good, tasty recipes.

What can I do next?

I love my crock pot. I am a single mom with two jobs, and believe me there is nothing better to coming home at the end of the day and not having to cook. I highly recommend the Fix it and Forget it cookbooks. I have 3 and I have made recipes from all of them. You can also find great recipes on Pinterest. My warning to you, be careful with broccoli, it changes the flavor of all the food in the crock pot. I only use it if it's the main food in the recipe. Good luck and have fun!

love love love my crock pot. cook in it at least 2 times a week. you can get cookbooks for crock pots or just ask on here. I'm giving you my current favorite crock pot recipe (which can also be made in the oven)

taco ranch chicken
4-6 boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 package dry taco seasoning
1 package dry ranch dressing mix
1 can chicken broth

lay chicken in bottom of crock pot pour chicken broth in. sprinkle both dry mixes over chicken. cover cook on low for 7 hours.

take chicken out and shred. put back into broth and mix well. let cook another hour.

serve on buns like pulled pork. I then use the left over and make enchiladas. so good....

good luck

Wanted to add that like B I have them in several sizes. I have a small one that is great for dips, sauces and small amounts of something for just me and hubby. A mid size one that is great for a family of 3 or maybe 4. and a huge one that I make enough chili to feed 20 in. they do take up space but I keep them put away in a cabinet unless using them. love them.

I don't like going off and leaving heating electronics plugged in without someone there. I know many people do it all the time and nothing happens.

I prefer to use my crockpot while I'm home.

I have a few staple recipes that I like and use whenever I cook in it. I know people who cook all sorts of things in them.

They aren't expensive so having one isn't much of a risk.

Great for soups and stews or meats that you want to "fall off the bone." I love it for pot roast with potatoes and carrots. You can also do homemade pasta sauces. I have a Fix It and Forget It cookbook that has great recipes. I wish I was more organized in the mornings so I could use it more.

Yes, I would get one.
I used mine all the time when my youngest was an infant.
Need to get back to it. Just not organized enough to have everything
ready in the morning to "set it & forget it".

To me the meat comes out more tender and juicy when cooked in the crock pot over the oven. Maybe because it is cooked slowly . I love a pot roast made on the crock pot. But anything youwould normally roast in the oven can be cooked in the crock pot as long as it fits.

I try to use a crockpot weekly. The thing is, though, food out of it isn't always very good, and to make it good, you need as many steps as old fashion cooking.

With that said, I make my refried beans in the crockpot. I also make carnitas in the crock pot. For things like this, the crockpot is the best.

Crockpots tend to leave things greasy.

I recommend the book the slow cooker revolutions...its by the test kitchen. It has some great recipes. But it doesn't save time. It just allows you to throw dinner together earlier in the day.

I got my first crock pot 4 or 5 years ago. Friends raved about them for so long, I'd never had one and didn't know if I'd like using one, but someone I knew was giving one away so I took it. I really like it. I can go weeks sometimes without using it, but it's quite handy for nights when I have something after work and wont' be home to do cooking, or if we all have different commitments at different times in the evening and might not all eat at the same time.

When I make something like a stew or roast with veggies, I don't leave the potatoes/vegetables in all day. Too soggy for me. I just have them prepped and have whomever gets home first dump them in so they just cook the last few hours.

There are plenty of good cookbooks and websites dedicated to crock pot recipes.

I love my crock pot. Honestly though I only have a few recipes that I like to use with it. Pulled pork, tortilla soup, stew, beef stroganoff, and chicken cacciatore to name a few. I hate cooking on the weekends so I always try to make our Sunday dinner in the crock pot (but not in the summer time - it's too hot.

We have kids that play sports so I find it perfect for nights when my daughter has a softball game on a weekday evening. We never know what time we will be home. The crock pot is perfect - dinner is ready whenever we get home no matter what time.

They are good for pot lucks or for a large group of people. They do take up a lot of space, but overall I'm glad I have one. If mine broke I would get another one.

I love my crock pot -- it's a nice, easy way to get dinner ready at breakfast time and let it simmer all day until dinnertime. I make chili, stews, soups, roast beef and pulled pork and it all comes out yummy. Sometimes all I do is put the roast in, chop up a bunch of veggies, add water and seasoning and it comes out great. Chili is so easy in a crock pot -- I just made white chicken chili the other day and it was great! Cleanup isn't a hassle because you're just cleaning one pot and the cutting board you chopped up the veggies or meat on.

I received one as a gift. If it were not a gift, I probably would not have gone out and purchased one because it is large and takes up space in my cabinets.

The only thing I make in mine is some great pulled pork.

I make pot roast, stews, and everything else on top of the stove and tend to them during the day.

Many people, especially moms working outside the home, swear by them.

Between the crock pot and pinterest, my cooking skills have totally changed- my hubby is one happy guy! I love that we can have REAL dinners during the week, when we are so busy! For example, tomorrow morning I'll put a turkey breast in the crock, throw a can of cranberry sauce, some o.j., and a few seasonings and when I get home from work, we have a yummy turkey dinner.

I use mine for pulled pork and that's about it. Everything else I try in it comes out mushy.

I use a crock pot up to 5 nights a week. My kids evening activities are hectic and my husband works two hours away. Without the crock pot, we would be eating out or eating hot dogs more often than not. So YES!! I just bought this one:

It's amazing and works perfectly.

I love my crock pot! I use it all the time! I'm a mom of 5. And during sports seasons there just isn't enough time to cook them a good meal. So I use the crock pot frequently. I've had mine for about 6 years and only paid about $40 for it. I have most certainly got my monies worth!!

One of my family's favorite crock-pot recipes is the easiest:

Beef roast + jar of pepperoncini (juice included) + 6 or so hours on low = yum!

Put on sandwiches with provolone or similar cheese. Leftovers make great nachos.
