Cries During Feeding

My 6-week-old has a habit of screaming every time I take a break in feeding to burp him. The nurse at his pediatrician's office just told me that some babies just do that. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and if so, do you have any tricks to keep him calmer? He spits up a lot, so I have to burp him often, but the blood-curdling screams are hard to take.

My 6 week old daughter does the same thing. After she burps, she feels better and latches right on. It is hard to hear her cry but it is better than her spitting up a lot of her feeding.

Hi!
I "hear" your pain!! My daughter is five months old and she does the same thing. I breast feed I don't know if you do, but I burp her between left and right... and she does the same thing. I will sometimes let her scream. And the only reason that I decide is by feeling her tummy when she sits up on my lap. If her stomach feels really hard and full, I will burp her even if she is screaming because it is probably hurting her more to have gas and I think thats why shes crying... But if she feels "squishy" on her belly and not bloated, I will just switch sides. Most of the time she will burp right away so I will know, and sometimes it takes a minute of her crying and then she'll stop, look scared, and then BURP!! Its funny and I still laugh at her when she does it! But I have been doing it that way since she was born, so that's my little tip for you, If he feels too bloated like there is gas in his belly then just let him cry and burp him. I know its hard, but just think of how good it feels to him to get that bubble out of there! Good Luck! Also, I burp Maddie pretty hard, and she likes that better then a lighter pat, maybe you should try patting him a little harder than you do. I don't know how hard you do it of course, but use your mommy judgement, because believe it or not, YOU ARE PROGRAMED FOR YOUR BABY! you know what's best for him, more so than any doctor, so trust your instincts!!

Hi there. My daughter is 7 months and still does this. I just let her eat and burp her afterwards. I know it's a little more difficult when you have an infant who characteristically spits up more frequently, but that eventually subsides. Try a couple different things to see what wqorks best for you and you little one. Sometimes giving a pacifier when you take away the bottle or breast will keep them calm enough to get a burp before they realize the switch ! :)

Good luck!

D. my name is N. and I have a similar problem with my 9 week old. A little after I bought him home from the hospital it seemed as if he was in pain after he ate all the time. I started with the constant screaming. So we took him to the dr. and they switched his milk and after switching about 6x, and him being allergic to the soy milk we had to switch to a hyperallergenic milk called Nutramigen by enfamil. then it turned out even with that he still had blood in his stool because his intestine is inflamed from the allergic reaction to the milk. So the Dr. sent us to a pediatric gastroenterologist and he switched him to the end of the line medicated formula called Elecare. now he's been on that for a little over a week and he is still having these horrible gut wrenching crying spells. It seems as if he is in so much pain and I really can't do anyhting about it. I am at my wits end also. I dont know if it is that server but you might want to see a gastroenterologist, at least for a second opinion! Well good luck with the baby. Please feel free to Keep in touch.

Hi D.. My daughter, whos now 3, did the same thing. She hated to be burped, screamed awful! For a while she wanted to eat every 1 1/2 -2 hrs. I just burped her despite the crying, sometimes i waited, let her eat more before burping. Well has your pedi said anything about him having reflux? That could be why hes spitting up so much, & why he screams alot. My daughter took medicine for it. Also a thought, do you see a chiroprator at all? They could help believe it or not. They can help babies with many health issues. Hang in there it gets better. These little people are so hard to figure out sometimes.

This happens all the time. I have a 7 month old who has done this since birth. It's hard to bare at times, and I'd love to say it gets easier, but it doesn't. I try to talk to him and tell him what is going to happen, and that I love him enough to burp him even though he screams. I kept talking him through all the steps and reassured him that the formula wasn't being taken away. After a while he got used to the routeen, and cried a bit less, but still cries. Keep your head up, talk to your baby. And just remind yourself and the baby that you are only doing what is best for them.

I dont know if you are nursing or using formula, but if its formula, you may try switching. My daughter was very gassy and pretty much the same as you just described, so we switched to soy formula, and she was a lot better.
