My son is 14 months old and sleeping good. Could be better for me. :) He is going down around 7:30, but lately he has been up between 5 and 5:30. It used to be an hour after that. I was thinking of getting soemthing safe for him to play with in his crib so I can have eithr a few more minutes in bed or some time to get ready. He seems tired still when he gets up, but I can't get him back to sleep.

I never used anything for my older son. Any suggestions? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I think it would be fine. My son is 5 months and I have a few things in his crib to comfort him so he doesn't think he's alone. At 14 months your son can certainly sit up, roll over and push something away from him if he doesn't want it. The only thing I might be worried about is that he confuses his crib as being a place to sleep with a place to play. But then maybe i'm overthinking it! :)

When mine was that age, someone gave me the idea of leaving a basket of safe toys right outside the crib within reach. When she woke up, she would play and play giving me all the time I needed! (BTW she is 21/2 now and is still in her crib and I could get away with leaving her in there all day if I wanted too, I think. She just sings, plays mommy to her doll, talks to herself etc!)

I think it's fine too. My son sometimes gets up pretty early too. What I have done a few times is go in after he falls asleep and put a few books and one toy car in there. He loves books and it buys a me a little itme :-)

Good Luck!

Hi R.,
Have you tried putting him to bed earlier? I know it sounds strange, but an earlier bedtime usually stops the early wake up. I HIGHLY recommend reading "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Dr. Marc Weissbluth to understand biological sleep rhythms and what you can do do sync your son's to produce the best, longest quality sleep possible. My daughter was asleep by 6-6:30pm at that age and took 2 one hour+ naps, one around 9am and one around 1pm. She would wake up in the morning around 6:30-7am. Dr. Weissbluth isn't a "cry it out" advocate though he does say that it is the fastest way to correct sleep problems. Try the earlier bedtime for 1-2 weeks and see if that helps. Also make sure he is getting enough sleep during the day. If you have questions email me. Always here to help and support fellow moms!
Sincerely,
L.

My only concern would be that you wouldn't want him to use the toys to get a leg out of the crib. So it would have to be small enough that he couldn't climb on it, but big enough that if he sucked on it while you weren't there it wouldn't be a big deal. Like those fabric books or something to the like.

Good luck...anything to get a few more minutes at that time of the morning!
