A friend of mine gave gift certificates from Carvel. They were even personalized with the child's name.
Hi! My oldest son will be turning 4 in October. I don't know about everyone else, but I am soooooooo tired of goody bags (giving them out, throwing junk away, etc.). Anyhow, I'm trying to think of something creative to give his guests. Has your child been given anything useful or do you have any creative ideas? His party will be at Pump It Up and his invitations/cake will be firefighter-themed. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Wow--these people have great ideas. I was going to suggest the coloring book and crayons too. You could also buy those mini jars of play-doh and give one per child. I just try to give something that I wouldn't mind my kids bringing home and that is inexpensive. One thing I have also done is include a little thank you note with the favor, saying thanks for sharing the child's special day with them. I still try to write individual thank you notes after the party, but at least this way I have already extended our thanks for taking time to come to the party.
When my son turned 5 I bought 4 of the new reader book packs and gave everyone a book and a sucker. The parents loved it because it was something they could actually use, and it cost me about the same as goody bags.

Kara has given you my idea. I did McDonald's gift cards, for the last 3 years. The kids seem to love them.

Download his favorite songs and make a CD for each child. Write on the cover "Jimmy's Party Mix", or "Jimmy's Favorite Songs". Really inexpensive and since most of the kids will be around the same age, they should like similar music. They can listen to the CD on their way home from the party. Wal Mart has downloads for 88 cents each- 10 songs $8.80!!!! Parents love it too! Good luck :)
I know a lady that sale adorable handmade soaps. She can do bulk orders for party favors. I used her for my son's first birthday and they were so cute, she custom made the design and colors I requested.
Here is her shop,

and here is some examples of what she has sold:
I would contact her and ask if she can do this one in mini party favor sizes:

For my daughters 1st Birthday party we took photos and gave them as favors. I got a Polaroid camera and little paper frames and took a picture of each child with the birthday girl. Everyone loved the idea and the kids can keep the picture in their room.
someone else had mentioned before giving out mcdonalds gift cards instead of party bags, which i think is a great idea
This year I bought a coloring book and a crayons box for each guest. (The books where the same theme of the party).
I went to a web site of schools supplies and they cost me .50 cvs. The 24 crayons boxes cost me .12 cvs in walmart.
The parents love them and I was not worried about more candies for them.
Hope this help.

My mom used to eat a lot of happy meals and saved the toys for me over the course of a year. I put them all in a tall bucket with a little stack of gift sacks next to them. I let the kids fill their sack with what they wanted. It was fun and affordable. You could start saving your kids happy meal toys over the course of a year. The kids are pretty much bored with the toys by the time you make it home anyway.
My daughter just went to a party and they gave out little toys. The mom went to the Dollar Tree and purchased slinkys, cards, books etc (1$ each or less) and the kids got to pick something as they left. I like it much better than candy! Have Fun
I used to live in Atlanta and my favorite cookies in the world were these little bagged cookies called Nam's Bits - they are the BEST! This year I went online and discovered that they do personalized cookie bags - so I had them printed with "Thank you for coming to Rourke's 3rd birthday party!" They are decorated so cute! It was a big hit!
