Creams Safe for Potential Digestion?

My 3 month old recently discovered her thumbs and now sucks and chews on her hands constantly. As a result, the tops of her thumbs and forefingers are very chapped. I have been putting hypo-allergenic baby lotion on them, but it is light and she seems to suck it off within minutes. Is there something with a little more staying power but that also wouldn't harm her if some of it were ingested?

What can I do next?

I would be very careful about putting anything on her hands if she is sucking on them. I would consult your doctor first.

FYI- I sucked my thumb until I was about 8. My parents did just about everything they could to get me to stop when I was older and nothing worked. I had a large chaped/blister spot on my thumb. It went away very quickly once I stopped.

I really wouldn't worry too much about the chapped hands if they don't seem to be bothering your daughter. Will she substitute a pacifer?

Have you tried bitter apple?
It's a spray, but it usually stays on.

Lanolin that a breastfeeding mother would use is safe to digest, and works GREAT on all chapped, dry areas.
