My daughter is now 7 months old and is still not crawling. She just now the other day started putting herself on all fours, but doesn't go anywhere. Also if you put her in a sit position she doesn't sit up straight she just topples over. Is this something i should be worried about?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just wanted to thank everyone who has answered for the advice. The main reason I worried was because my sister in-law had a baby boy a little over a month before I had my daughter he is even crawling now, but there is something behind the height I guess. She is a lot taller than he is and very skinny for her age. So thank you very much everyone and I guess I will just continue to let her go at her own pace.

My son took his sweet time trying to crawl. He was 'almost there' for so long and I don't think he even started scootching until 8 months. But once he did, he crawled within 2 weeks and 2 weeks later he was pulling himself to a stand and the next day he climbed 3 small stairs. Some babies don't even crawl; they go right into walking from sitting. Good luck!

My son didn't start crawling until he was 10 months old and didn't sit up on his own until after he could crawl. He was a preemie and is very small for his age so he just didn't have enough muscle yet. I wouldn't worry about it. Like everyone else said, 7 months is still very young. Also, I was so anxious for my son to be able to move and now that he does I wish he couldn't sometimes, lol! It was kind of nice to be able to leave him somewhere so I could run into the other room.

My son didn't start crawling till he was 9 months old and even then it was kind of an army crawl he is 11 months now and is just starting to crawl up on all fours. I had development specialists and physical therapists evaluate him at 8 1/2 months and they said he was up to speed in all other areas and sure enough within a couple weeks he was crawling around. Now he's pulling himself up to stand and getting into all kinds of trouble he was still wobbly too until the last month or so when he really started getting around and got a little stronger. I'd give it some more time. One day you'll turn around and she won't be were you left her she'll be all the way across the room. It happens just like that!

Hi M.,

My name is A. David I am a stay at home mom and a lia sophia jewelry advisor and watch my friend little girl who is behind on everything she is 11months and just learned to sit up on her own this month and she can't crawl either but her pediatician says everything is ok and to give it more time. There are so many factors to consider when you child is not on target it could be: is she bigger than the average 7month old like with the girl I babysit she is long and lean but can't contol her limbs because she is so gangly. It also could be she is to small and hasn't developed enough muscle mass. I for sure would not be too concerned at this point but since she is your first you have to remember to put her down and let her have lots of tummy time!!! I hope this helps. I have three kids and they all developed differently. As for the job part I have found a great company to work for. I have jewelry parties and take home 30% in my pocket of the sales and had no start up cost. My manager right now is sick of going to Minnesota every weekend to do parties we really need an advisor in Minnesota!! IF you would like more information email me at ____@____.com I think we could really get you started strong right away and you can still stay home with your daughter! I do 1-2 shows a week and take home anywhere from $150 to $300 profit from each show!!! well have a great day and email me if you have anymore baby questions too!!!

Hi M. -
I have a 7month old son. He is not crawling yet either. He gets up on all fours and rocks front and back, but that is it. Getting up on all fours means he wants to crawl, it will just take some time to master it. Don't worry, she'll be crawling by Christmas. That is what my family keeps telling me.
Sitting up, is just a balance thing. When you put her down, try balancing her between your legs, or sit indian style, and have her sit in your lap without holding on to her. That seemed to give Logan the idea behind sitting up by himself. There is nothing to worry about. There is no set schedule for these things. My nephew just learned to sit up by himself, and he is 3weeks older than Logan. Everything will be fine. You'll find that once she has the idea down, she will master it (sitting or crawling) very quickly.
Let me know how it all works out.

My oldest daughter didn't start to crawl until she was 9 1/2 months, then started walking at 10 months. The Dr's were worried, but she is now 11 YEARS old, completely normal and healthy. My only suggestion is that if your gut says something is wrong, talk to a Dr. But, it you are worried because the books are saying she isn't hitting the milestones, give it some time.

If you have brought up these to your pediatrician and they haven't been worried, I wouldn't worry about it.

My son is quite tall for his age and always had a harder time sitting up, he didn't exactly topple over, but he's long in the torso and his center of balance is off because of this (his is up top, where most kids are centered). If you can afford it, I'd try purchasing a bumbo. My daycare provider had one of those and sat my son in it for a bit each day. He learned to keep his balance, it also helped I think with getting his sides strong enough to help balance him, but still had a little freedom to move.

My son only army crawled until about 8 or 9 months, then he started the real crawling. He's no 13 months old and cruises along furniture, but his high center of gravity makes him wobbly so he's afraid to let go and take more than 1 step on his own.

Bottom line, if you're worried, I'd just bring it up to her pediatrician and if they are not worried I wouldn't be.

I wouldn't worry at all. Some kids skip crawling and go straight to walking. My little guy is 7 months and doesn't even roll over. He sits up great, but I don't expect him to crawl for a couple months yet.

My son didn't crawl until he was nearly 12 months. He prefered to scoot on his tummy and do an "army crawl". He didn't walk till nearly 15 months. However, he was talking at 10! I think all kids develop on their own schedule and are all caught up when the need to be. My son is now 20 months and walks/talks/runs like a "normal" toddler!

Okay, some kids never crawl. My daughter mastered rolling and went from rolling to pulling up to walking. Your little precious is only 7 mos and that is pretty young still, give her time and she too will find her own style of getting around.

I know how hard it is to think that your child is not on pace with those around them. But do not worry (easier said then done) my son is over 9 months and is not crawling...but my first child did not really crawl either...and it was not until 10 or so months. He pretty much just rolled around and then walked. I worried a lot about that stuff with my first child...not so much with this one. Please know that your fears are natural and healthy even, but I do not think there is anything wrong with your daughter.

My son, now 4, did not crawl until nearly 10 months. Even then, he only crawled for about three weeks then started walking. I have two neighbors with infants. One is 9 months and the other is 7 months. Neither of them are crawling yet. My best friend's daughter is 15 months and is still not walking. Your worry is normal. I did it too. Try not to take too much stock in those developmental milestones. They only depict an average. Remember the average of 0 and 100 is 50!

I wouldn't worry about it. It's actually pretty normal, all kids develop differently-I had a neighbor who's son didn't walk until 15 mo! I had a neice that didn't really crawl at all and was walking at 10 months! She's probably excelling in a different area-perhaps her language or small motor skills are ahead of her age? Don't worry-enjoy the time that she's relatively contained-once they start crawling it's a whole new game!

My daughter didn't crawl until she was 9 months old and only started sitting up by herself at 6 1/2 months. I definitely wouldn't worry about the crawling because some babies don't crawl at all. You could ask your pediatrician about the sitting up, though.

Good luck,
M.

All kids develop differently although where you caught my attention is that when she sits up she topples over. My daughter was pretty late with all her physical development but was also born premature. She was extremely clumbsy and accident prone and I felt something just wasn't right. At age 3 she didn't do well at her preschool screening as far as anything physical, I took her to her pediatrician and eventually to a pediatric physical therapist who tested my daughter and said she had very poor gross motor skills, weak ankles, and her trunk muscles (tummy area) was very weak which made walking, running, climbing harder for her etc. She couldn't keep up with the kids at daycare on the playground. After 6mos. of physical therapy she was normal and just fine and we stopped going. A common thing to look for in kids like this as they will sit like a "W" with their legs flung out to the sides. So not to scare you but I'd work on tummy time and keep and eye on things but like I said all kids develop at different paces. I had more ppl tell me there was nothing wrong with my daughter but I listened to my instincts and I'm glad I did.

Crawling is not one of the milestones the medical community look for in the developmental step ladder. Some kids crawl and some kids don't. My daughter didn't crawl until the day before her 1st bday and that was only because she decided she was too tired to walk over and get her bear for bed. That was the one and only time that she crawled. Don't worry....look for the other milestones as a better way to determine if your child is on track!

As for the crawling, she is only 7 months old! Give it time, 7 months is quite young and you said she is getting on all fours, thats great!
Sitting...if she can get on all fours, the nshe should be able to sit up, but that does take different muscles. Encourage her to sit by sitting with her, put some pillows around her and play, or sit with your legs out and put her with her bac kto your belly, then slowly move back a little so she is supporting herself.

But at 7 months, she sounds like she is right on track, nothing to worry about!

Don't worry too much yet. My oldest didn't crawl until 9 months, backwards and 10 months forwards. She walked a day after her 1st birthday. A lot of it has to do with size and weight too. My kids are big kids and were slower but my foster baby is chubby but really short so he started crawling at 6 months and is almost walking at 10 months. All kids are different and motivation has a lot to do with it also. This baby has 3 other older kids to keep up with so he's VERY motivated. A first child might not have as much drive because there's no one to chase down :o)

I don't think there's a set time table for when babies must crawl...especially if she's only 7 months old, I wouldn't worry about it yet. My daughter was almost 8 months old when she crawled and now she's walking and I wish I had the time back when she didn't move so much...she's hard to catch! Every baby is different...I've heard some babies never crawl...they just start walking. If you're really concerned talk to your pediatrician. Enjoy her less mobile time while you can!
