I would only accept paypal. I sold Cowboys tickets and got 5 fake one hundred dollar bills in December.
I was just wondering if any of you are familiar with any current scam going on with craigslist? I'm posted an ad to sell my Toshiba laptop and I'm getting some weird replies. At first glance, they seem normal, but the fact that there are more than 1 that sound very similar are making me skeptical. These particular responses stress that they want to do it fast, ask for my full name, email address, and home address so that they can send payment via postal mail and that they have a fed ex account for me to ship the item. There are about 3 like this. Does this sound legit?

That sounds very strange to me. I don't think that I would give anyone that kind of information about me. When I have sold things on craigslist, I have the people meet me somehwere near my home in a very public place.
I can not believe it is still going on !!! This scam is few years old. 3 years back while selling stuff on craigslist I got such response and person was willing to buy everything (I had lot of furniture on sale). He was buying everything for the price I was selling on. He told me he is moving from UK to USA so needs everything. Then he told me he will send me a check for the amount + $500 as he is buying other stuff and it's easier for him to send one check and I should send check for $500 to so and so. That made me ask around and I came to know about it all being a scam.
I was saved at the last minute. I keep telling all my friends who sell on craigslist about it. Since then I have sold few smaller item but not big things on craigslist and have not received such responses so I was thinking may be it has stopped but I guess I was wrong.
But spread the word around so people are aware of such scam and do not loose our hard earned money on these scammers.
It's a scam but check out this link:

It will tell you what to look for. Cash only, never accept a money order. It could be fake.
that is a scam avoid them. I had a guy doing the same thing to me and I noticed that he would e-mail me back from a different e-mail address! That was the same thing he had a account and wanted my info. I just had no more contact with him. I never give out my info and always accept cash in person. Or if they had paypal I will ship.
Oh yeah its a scam.... unfortunatley, the scammers got me once, but won't be happening again. In my case, I told the lady to pay me via PayPal which is safe, well I got an email from which I thought was PayPal but was fake, stating I needed to provide a tracking number in order to release the funds to my account. So I went ahead and shipped the item, never received payment. I also have had people send me fake cashiers checks too, be very, very careful.
That is a scam for sure!
I always say sure.. whats the best number to reach you at?
All of a sudden you never hear from them lol
It is a scam. Dateline did a special on people overseas who just sit on the computer all day looking for someone to steal from. The scam is that they have this story of why and how they'll buy from you, they ask for a bank account and send a fake money order which can't be detected as fake until 2-3 weeks later after it has already cleared your account and you've sent the product. If it sounds shady, it is.
It's a scam. I've experienced it with every electronic device that I've tried to sell on Craig's List. They will go back & forth with you telling you sob stories. Basically, it will boil down to them trying to send you a cashier's check. You "reimburse" them the money & try to cash the check. The check is not valid, & you're out a lot of money for bank expenses.
If you ever ship anything, always get them to pay with PayPal. It protects you & them.
No NO and NO!! You you might give out your email address to corresponde with them but never give out an account number and by all means don't ship the laptop without sending payment first.
There are scams for high dollar items on CraigsList ...otherwise I love it!
not sure if its real or not but dont ever give address out. Get a po box for temporary or keep it for things like this. Or if you want you might ck with your bank and see if there is a way that someone can put the money in your account with out knowing all your details. Explain the situation. I personally would not give any info nor would i meet in person. If they find out your name or even your lisc. plate number they can find out where you live. I have a program that i go under and can find out any thing on any one. I have used this for years to find out info on a lost brother but I have also used it when one of my g/f's have started date'n someone new. All I need is a name or a lisc plate and I get their DL# where they have lived and where they currently live, any one that has lived in the current address with them, the d.o.b. crimnal back ground etc. Just becareful. Give as less info as possible.

Hi Alexandra,
I don't know, but I would not be comfortable giving out all of that information to someone I don't know. Craigslist is for locals, so I'd insist that if they want the item they would need to meet me (in a very public place where lots of other people are) to exchange the item and money.
Again, I don't know that these aren't legitimate people looking to buy something, but I have always felt the need to be extra cautious on Craislist. It just can't hurt to be careful. The only information I give out is my cell phone number when arranging a place to meet.
Good luck.

We have sold several items thru craigslist and haven't gotten this one. I say no way. Usually we give a phone number (cell phone is best) and they call us and we can talk. You can also arrange to meet them at a public spot to do the transaction rather than at your house. Hope this helps.
I have bought and sold tuns off stuff on craigslist I would not but anything where I send the money and then mail it to them. sounds way to much like a scam. Dont realy know what the scam would be but I wouldnt do it. I have never bought anything off of craiglist that had to be shipped I always went to pick it up. I thought that was the point of buying on craigslist and not ebay.
it's a scam! just tell them you are very sorry, but have already sold the item to someone who paid via paypal...lol
It is a scam. I would recommend deleting the email immediately. Don't respond!
Sounds fishy, as if they will pressure you to quickly ship the laptop before making sure the payment is authentic. There is a big scam (craigslist, eBay, etc.) with counterfeit money orders. People receive the money order and believing they have cash in hand, ship out the pricey item only to later learn that they are holding worthless paper when they go to cash in the money order.
If you accept a money order, only accept a US Postal money order - they are difficult to counterfeit. Be very sure you have funds in hand before shipping! Often times, once you state your conditions (verified funds prior to shipping), the scammers will lose interest in the transaction and you will not hear from them again.
Good luck!!
It definitely sounds like a scam.
I don't know of a scam though sounds fishy. It's possible that there are refurbishing companies that are looking for these products for selling them at a profit. If you are concerned about the privacy of your home address, just set up a P.O. Box at the post office to protect your privacy and they can send the money there.
I am on a lot of egroups and this sort of scam is all over the
place just delete and ignore....!!!
unless you get a response with anything your doing business with that isnt normal.. as far as contacting the person directly and discussing arrangements.. in a normal fashion.., as far as cost and shipping etc.... IGNORE it it is a scam...you do have to be watchful now days some are pretty good also at ripping off people. best thing to do if possible is to talk to the person by phone if in doubt and do it in person scam people wont do this.
Don't not accept ANYTHING but cash from people off Craigslist, make them pick up item and pay you with cash. There are too many ways to get fradulent payment, ie money orders, cashiers check and checks. And of course be safe about how you meet someone, meet them at a public place and have someone with you.
