Crafty Mommas- Need Ideas for Cub Scout Swaps

My son is going to his first cub scout day camp. The theme is "Salute Our Nations Heroes" (military, police, firefighters, teachers, etc). We need to create "swaps" for him to exchange with the other boys that fit the theme. They need to be tiny enough to pin a bunch on a hat. The cub scout website said "the grosser the better." Not sure how to mix the theme and "gross." At this point... just looking for any quick and fairly easy idea that will look half-way decent and fit the theme.

Would love any and all ideas!

What can I do next?

Maybe some small plastic insects like roaches or beetles. Glue on some pins (Michaels sells bags of them). Maybe paint them red white and blue.

Our Pack has never done swaps, but our girl scouts do. But for GS, they're usually very cute (not gross). Our favorites were doughnut seeds (cheerios packed in small bags and labeled for sale) and mini s'mores. I agree the theme and the "gross" part don't mix. I'd be sticking to the theme only, personally. I'm trying to discourage the scatological humor my kids love so well. There are tons of suggestions for swaps on Pinterest.

They want to salute our Nation's heroes, but yet they said the grosser the better?
How the heck?

our pack didn't do anything like this. I can't imagine "saluting our nation's Heroes' with "gross" stuff.

So I don't know how I would participate in this as it doesn't seem like the "swap" fits the theme. How can you honor someone who steps into a burning building to save someone with something gross??

I like Laurie's idea! I have to admit though, I don't really get the "pinning them to the hat" thing...weird? or not? Anyway, I suppose you could do the same type of thing with army men or something. You'd probably need hot glue, but maybe craft glue or super glue would be okay.

You could string red, white and blue beads on a pins.

You could get some "badge" stickers that resemble those of a police officer or firefighter. Plus those would just stick themselves to the hat.

Maybe you could make yellow ribbons, those would pin easily...or get some red, white, and blue ribbon and make those into the "ribbon for a cause" shape. You could even maybe take a sharpie and write the boys' names on them or the troop number.

I guess none of mine are gross, that is kind of hard I think!

Make red, white, and blue beaded safety pins. Tiny flags on pins.

For this theme it is safe to skip the "gross".

I agree with your other responses. Forget gross. My son thinks gross is funny. Maybe a red white and blue badge shaped pin? He would think that was cool. And cool is much better than gross.
Red white and blue craft supplies should be very easy to find this time of the year.
My cousin made safety pin flags for her scout in the past. They were easy enough that her scout could help.
